Dr. Shaun Powell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Shaun, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel that God is calling me to step into areas that I once let fear hold me back from. Before, I might have doubted myself or worried about what others would think, but now I know that faith and fear can’t occupy the same space. I’m being called to walk boldly in purpose, to use my gifts without hesitation, and to trust that God has already equipped me for the assignments ahead.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dr. Shaun ‘Doc’ Powell, and I’m a filmmaker, playwright, and educator whose work is rooted in both storytelling and faith. I lead Powellful Productions, a company dedicated to producing films and creative projects that not only entertain but also inspire, heal, and spark meaningful conversations. What makes my brand unique is that I approach storytelling as ministry—I believe every story has the power to transform lives and shine light in places where it’s needed most.
Right now, I’m working on projects that amplify overlooked voices, create opportunities for others to share their stories, and use creativity as a tool for impact. Whether through film, theatre, or community initiatives, my mission is to remind people that their dreams and voices matter, and to walk boldly in the purpose God has given me
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My faith tells me God saw me first, but He also placed people in my life who reflected that vision back to me. Mentors, family, and even students have seen the light and purpose in me at times when I was struggling to recognize it. Their belief in me pushed me to believe in myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there were moments when I thought about giving up. Life has a way of testing your strength and faith, and I’ve faced seasons where the challenges felt overwhelming. But in those times, I leaned on God, and He gave me the assurance and direction I needed to keep going. Looking back, I can see that those tests were really preparation for where I am now
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the film industry tells itself is that women’s stories don’t sell or that female-led projects aren’t as powerful or profitable. I’ve seen firsthand that audiences are hungry for authentic stories, no matter who they come from. Another lie is that success has to look a certain way. I believe the truth is the opposite: when you walk in authenticity and purpose, your work resonates even more.
As a woman in film, I’ve had to push past those false narratives, but I also see them slowly being dismantled. More women are leading, directing, and producing, and proving every day that our stories and voices not only belong here, but they also make the industry stronger.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had 10 years left, I would immediately stop doubting myself or second-guessing the vision God gave me. I’d let go of distractions, people-pleasing, and anything that doesn’t align with my purpose. Time is too precious to waste on fear or hesitation. I’d pour everything into the assignments God has placed in my hands and live with even more boldness and intention.
