We recently had the chance to connect with Brandi Beck Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Brandi, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I am not a morning person (I wish I was), so I hit snooze as long as I can. Then I get out of bed and hit play on my daily Bible reading app. Right now I’m listening to The Bible with Nicky and Pippa Gumbel. It helps me feel grounded when I start my day with Truth-the Word of God. I listen to that while I’m getting ready for the day. I make my bed every morning and straighten up the house as I walk through it. I live with 5 guys (my husband and 4 sons) so it can get messy if I don’t constantly pick up after them. They help out sometimes too. I open all the blinds in our home because we live on a beautiful old dairy farm that’s no longer in operation. The views out of each window are gorgeous and inspiring and I like to see the sun shine through the house. Usually I like to look out the front door first thing in the morning to admire the beauty of Gods creation. Then I turn to the right and flip the daily calendar over to read the inspiring thought for the day. My husband usually fixes me coffee and I add collagen powder and MCT oil to it. I take a lot of natural supplements in the morning and always eat breakfast with my coffee. I drive to work and pray for our family on the way to work. I like to listen to Good Morning by Mandisa in the car to help wake me up.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all! I am a Pastor’s wife and mother of four sons who lives in South Georgia. I am an author & speaker who calls women to biblical womanhood. I serve on staff at our church and lead the women’s ministry. My husband and I have planted two churches and started a christian school. We have lived in Kentucky and West Virginia and various parts of Georgia. We founded True Vine World Ministries and have been in the ministry for close to 25 years. My husband and I started something called Ty Ty Takeaways which is aired on our churches You Tube and Facebook each Monday. We ask different guests to come on from time to time as well. My recent project was completing a digital magazine. I asked people I knew personally that have walked through tragedies or hard circumstances to write about their experience along with their picture. It was truly inspiring putting it together. I also recently placed some of my books and products in a local boutique. My story is one of depression, anxiety, and emotional abuse which led to physical health issues such as autoimmune disease. I promote products that support my physical and mental health and wellness as well as write books about it.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was in college I went on a mission trip to Paris, France. One day we climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I will never forget looking down from there and watching the people at the bottom walking around like little ants. They were tiny. It made me realize how small humans are compared to the bigness of God. That will keep you humble.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, more than once. When my husband was trapped in India in jail, I looked at a dear woman in the church we planted and I said, “Is it worth it?” That concerned her and she started an around the clock prayer chain for my husband. By God’s grace, he was able to call the US Embassy and make it safely home after the mission trip. Another time when I was battling post partum depression and could barely eat or walk, I felt like I was dying. I thought I would never get better. But by God’s grace I did. The only reason the urgent care doctor knew I had PPD was because his wife had it after their child was born. She had it so bad that they decided not to have any more children. That saddened me.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Valuing education and a career over getting married and starting a family. Skipping church to do other activities. Leaving the Bible out of their life. Valuing degrees over experience and talent over integrity.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Sometimes people tend to view the world through the lens of their spiritual gift if they are a believer. I definitely view the world through mine. I have a strong sense of right and wrong according to biblical truth and measure everything by it. I try to view everything from a biblical worldview and see things with spiritual eyes. This can be intimidating to certain types of people. Those with the spiritual gift of prophecy understand each other though. I would encourage each christian to study the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to show them what their spiritual gift is. It can be life changing!
