Story & Lesson Highlights with Amy Hales of Orange Park

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Amy Hales. Check out our conversation below.

Amy, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Wandering along a path! I have goals and dreams of where I want to be, yet, sometimes life throws a detour at you and suddenly your path changes. I love tackling new things, I love learning. So, I take those changes and see what I can do with them. Never stop learning. Keep growing.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My mom and I started Rummies & Yummies, a Custom Rum Cake Factory, over 13 years ago. We wanted to create made from scratch desserts – that were affordable – and have fun!
In 2021, we opened our retail location, where we serve delicious baked goods, coffee, latte / espresso, tea, smoothies and ice cream.
We have hosted several training events (such as LinkedIn Tips, Resume Tips, etc.) and community building events (such as Military Connections – designed to bridge the gap between our local military bases and our local business owners).
Operating a business with my mom has been a highlight of my career. Being able to homeschool my son and working with my family has been really fulfilling. I am constantly creating new flavors of Rum Cakes, Rum Balls, Bourbon Balls, Specialty Cakes…I simply love to experiment!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Throughout my career in Corporate Training, my passion has been guiding individuals as they master new skills essential to their roles. One moment that stands out was witnessing the transformation of an associate who had never used a computer before. Coming from a hands-on background in the plumbing industry, he suddenly found himself in a role where digital proficiency—especially data entry—was non-negotiable. Watching his “lightbulb” moment, when everything clicked and he confidently navigated his new digital responsibilities, was a powerful reminder of why I do this work.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It is ok to take a different path; you might not end up where you planned. And that is totally ok. It might even be way better than the original path!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Ask questions. Will this change be around in 20, 50 or even 100 years? Will it impact a few people or millions? What kinds of impacts? Who is impacted? What is impacted? Is it Religious / Social / Economic / Political in nature? I am intrigued by history and knowing how civilization rise and fall, what can trigger those seismic events…take a step back and think, is this a fad or a foundational shift that will be felt further down our timeline?

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My Rum Cakes! The ability to call me and order whatever flavor of cake & frosting they want to try – or just having the option to swing by and see what I created today.
