Rising Stars: Meet Tom Schueman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Schueman.

Hi Tom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Chicago, where my mom served as a Chicago cop. My single mom worked hard and provided opportunities for me that she hadn’t dreamed of for herself. 9/11 changed the trajectory of my life. From that day forward, I knew that I’d serve. I went to college and joined the ROTC unit; I was commissioned as a Marine officer in 2008. I deployed to Afghanistan twice. I went on to teach literature at the Naval Academy, and I’m still on active duty. In 2020, I founded a nonprofit, Patrol Base Abbate, to combat veteran suicide. We run programs for veterans in Montana and have 50 local chapters, one of which is in Jacksonville.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There was plenty of adversity. I’m thankful for everything because it’s helped mold and shape me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an operations officer at an infantry battalion; a published poet and writer with a book set to come out on August 9th; I’m the president of Patrol Base Abbate.

Had we loved to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up?
