Rising Stars: Meet Tk Turner of West side Jacksonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tk Turner.

Hi Tk, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It’s also where I discovered my skill for making people laugh—though, sadly enough, the classroom was my stage. Of course, my parents weren’t fans of this, which definitely led to plenty of punishments and weekends spent in my room. But that time helped me discover my love for the art of comedy.

I would sneak and watch or listen to my father’s collection of DVDs and CDs, which included classics like The Kings of Comedy, Bad News Bears, and an interlude on a Jay-Z album featuring a character named Threats, played by Cedric the Entertainer. I’ll never forget being at my cousin’s house and watching a set by Corey Holcomb—that performance secured my dream of wanting to become a comedian.

After graduating in 2014, I relocated to North Carolina. It was a difficult adjustment since I no longer had family or my closest friends around. I began to work, and every job became a stage. My humor brought some good people into my life and helped create bonds that felt like family. I eventually began my comedy journey in late 2020 at the legendary Goodnights Comedy Club in Raleigh. After honing my craft across the state—performing in clubs, bars, and pubs—I built a reputation for delivering honest, hectic life stories and lessons through relatable, engaging, and hilarious performances.

Determined to grow in the industry and needing a change of environment, I later moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where I continue to sharpen my skills and expand my reach, and also learning more about the comedy business from getting better at networking to getting better at booking shows and even developing and maturing my jokes and self confidence. With nearly five years in comedy, I remain committed to traveling, performing, and leaving audiences in stitches.

Lord willing and life lasting, I’m dedicated to becoming one of the greats in stand-up comedy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The stage has been the easiest part for me honestly it’s everything else off the stage that’s the struggle. From financing travel, managing and keeping up with different mics and shows, rejection and periods where nothing is being booked can be difficult and mentally challenging can feel or think am I good enough. Not including life and all the things and duties that comes with .

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a stand up comedian and content crew. I’m most proud of the joy and and laughs I can bring to the people at the shows, the conversations and joke workshops helping and working with others. The fact that even tho I feel like I’m so far from my goals and struggle with my own battles I still show up and bring all the baggage with me I wear my scars with pride and that’s what sets me apart plus my family and upbringing is familiar with a touch of chaos

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Never be afraid to do what you love and be your true self others might not understand friends and family might not support but keep you faith, and happiness first everything else will come into order. What’s meant will be, what’s yours will come to you, stay prayed up stay true.
