I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any hands-on, design-driven business, there were real challenges along the way—especially when it came to learning new technology. Mastering new tools, equipment, and processes meant plenty of trial and error, which often led to wasted metal, lost time, and costly mistakes during the learning process. But each setback became part of the education. Those challenges sharpened our skills, refined our designs, and pushed us to work smarter and more efficiently. Today, that hard-earned experience allows Heavy Metal Designs to create precise, intentional pieces with confidence, consistency, and craftsmanship built from lessons learned the hard way.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
One of the biggest risks I took was starting Heavy Metal Designs as a side gig. Balancing long workdays, learning new technology, investing in materials, and putting in late nights meant sacrificing time and comfort with no guarantee it would pay off.
There was risk in the uncertainty—risk in the money spent, the metal wasted during the learning process, and the time invested while building something from the ground up. But starting as a side business allowed me to test ideas, refine my craft, and grow with intention instead of rushing. To me, smart risk is calculated: learn as you go, adapt quickly, and stay committed even when progress is slow.
