Today we’d like to introduce you to Priya Johnson.
Hi Priya , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My dad is a basketball coach and trainer, so I grew up going to the gym and basketball courts with him. I slowly started picking up a basketball and learning how to dribble. When I turned 8, I began working on my ball-handling and shooting mechanics.
My dad told me that when I turned 10 years old, I could join a team, so I decided to focus more and work harder on my game. I trained often with my dad and my older sister, and I also attended summer basketball camps. Every day, I continue to learn, improve, and build my confidence as a player. I’m excited to keep growing and see where basketball can take me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not really. One of the hardest times was when my sister tore her ACL because I stopped playing basketball for a while. I still trained a little with my dad, but I really enjoyed going outside and playing in the driveway with my sister.
It also became more challenging when I decided to play volleyball. Playing two sports at the same time could be difficult and tiring. Volleyball took extra work because I was new to it, so I had to learn a lot while still working on my basketball skills. Even though it was hard at times, it taught me how to work harder, stay focused, and keep improving.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a young athlete who plays basketball and volleyball. I spend a lot of time practicing my skills, learning new things, and becoming a better teammate. Since this was my first year playing on a basketball team, I focused on improving my confidence, shooting, ball handling, and understanding the game.
I’m known for working hard and always trying to get better. I’m most proud of scoring 18 of my team’s 25 points to help us get our first win of the season. Since it was my first time playing on a team, my first few games were an adjustment, but I kept working and became more comfortable.
What sets me apart is that I don’t give up. I’m willing to put in extra work, listen to my coaches, and continue learning every day while balancing both basketball and volleyball.
What makes you happy?
My family makes me happy because I love spending time with them. They are funny, loving, and always supportive of me. They encourage me to work hard and help me become a better person and athlete. I love that we can have fun together, and I know they will always be there for me. My family means a lot to me, and I’m very thankful for them.
