Rising Stars: Meet Mecca Wy’Asia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mecca Wy’Asia.

Hi Mecca, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Mecca Wy’Asia Jones, and I go by Mecca Wy’Asia. I was born in Virginia Beach, VA.

My parents are both artists, my father is an MC and my mother is a singer/songwriter. At the age of 6 years old, I started recording background vocals for my father and many other artists. After a lot of those sessions, my dad would gift me a notebook and some tracks he burnt on a CD. When I got older I never stopped creating my own music.

I was even involved in church choirs, singing competitions, school choirs from elementary through high school, and I even attended a performing arts school called The Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk, VA for vocal music. If it wasn’t for music I don’t know where I’d be today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I’m being completely honest, it was never a smooth road.

My mom and dad weren’t together and my siblings and I moved around a lot. My dad was in and out of my life, and it was hard for me as a kid because I believed that I had a closer relationship with him since he introduced me to the studio and my creativity. I felt abandoned and confused. My mother loves me and my siblings, and she did everything she could to make sure we had a good life. However, she struggled with her own personal demons.

That made it very hard for me to go to her about my music. She didn’t encourage me to create the way I needed her to at the time. Now that I am older and have expressed that to her, we made amends. I was determined to patch that wound up. We have a much stronger relationship today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist. I specialize in vocal music, songwriting, and cooking.

I always would call myself a good witch, because I consider myself to be a healer. Whether that be through my music or my food. I’m known for my humble, goofy personality. I can be shy at first, but once I warm up to you I can be a little annoying lol. I’m proud of the woman I am today.

Each day I find something about myself that I love more and more. I struggled with depression a little while ago. Learning to love myself, flaws and all was a huge accomplishment for me. I think what sets me apart from others is I don’t cage myself. When it comes to music I try to incorporate every genre. At least my favorites that is.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Music is eternal so I don’t think it will go anywhere per se.

I believe it’ll evolve, but at the same time, it’s like history. It’ll have to repeat itself, meaning we may go back to our roots. You’re going to hear more of what our great great great grandparents used to listen to but in a more modern time version.
