Rising Stars: Meet Kuri Kapa of Tartu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kuri Kapa.

Hi Kuri, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a nu punk band from Estonia called Puberteet. It started out as a panic attack induced reaction to my future, in which I was scared about. I went mad and wrote stupid songs for a little while with a jokingly manner adding punk rock elements due to its simplicity and truthful honesty. The process was short and very much fun. The panic also passed within a few months but left me with the intrigue resolve of further creativity. I chose to pursue those inspirations in favour of cheap laughs and favorable alcoholism tendencies, through which I have since found four friends to form an actual collective. It’s fun, it’s a blast and it’s great. Since forming in 2015, we have created a cult following across Estonia, practicly the most beloved and influential nu punk bands in Estonia.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The beginnings were the best, I’d say. Everything came together practicly itself. Everything felt as organic and time was no object to be worried about. Nowadays its bit hard to get the people together. Making a first album and just really getting started was not much of a challenge but rather a thrilling experience. While everyhing now has taken shape experience wise, its rather tough to keep it afloat both physically and mentally.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to create and perform. I like to say things and I like to vibe to music. I like to imagine sounds and make up visual ideas. I enjoy doing it all on my own and alone. I don’t like it really when other people intervene for my vision but on rare occasions I am able to bend my personality. I guess I like to be in charge of art direction. Most proud I’d be for the fact that there is no one else who could really capture all sorts of emotion in the punk scene of Estonia. We have songs about serious manners of emotion and we have songs that disregards those same emotions. I like the dynamic approach in art we have so far managed to create.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Don’t drink too much and always leave some for your friends.
