Rising Stars: Meet Krista Kunkel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Kunkel.

Krista, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Fifteen years ago, I bought a Jeep Wrangler. Not many girls were involved in the community when I got a Jeep. I started asking everyone around me to teach me how to wrench on my own Jeep. I started a Facebook page just to inspire other ladies to get more involved in the hobby.

After building Michigan Jeep Girl as a brand I really wanted to focus on starting my own business. I started my business which is called FakeWrenching. I often get asked how I came up with the name and it’s actually kinda funny, I took all the hate and comments on my media saying I was fake-wrenching for media and named my company after it.

FakeWrenching is an apparel company with apparel to make you smile. I hand make all my apparel items and design my own designs. It warms my heart when I attend Jeep events and people come up wearing my apparel.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing about owning a small business is smooth.

I quit a full-time job years ago and this is my full-time job. Some months you don’t know if you can pay rent. Some months your making way more than rent.

It’s always ups and downs. It’s a never-ending conversation in your head with yourself. You never stop working because you never know how next week or next month will go.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been in the Jeep industry for over 11 years. I work in the media marketing industry and own Fakewrenching.com.

I’m known for my creative and weird approach to advertising. I run my own media but I also freelance with other companies. I love having the opportunity to work with new companies and show them a new approach to media.

My motto is entertain and educate. Always leave someone with a smile on their face.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
When I talk sometimes these random different accents come out. It’s all the way from a southern accent to a British accent. I have no idea why it happens but it’s pretty funny.
