Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalani Rose.
Hi Kalani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Aloha, My name is Kalani Rose. I am a local musician in the Jacksonville Area. I’ve had a passion for music ever since I first heard Norah Jones’ “Come Away with me” Album when I was 6.
I loved the feeling of singing and still carry that to this day. I am a full-time musician gigging throughout the Florida coast. You may find me gigging in Jacksonville Beaches, at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and even occasionally in San Diego. CA.
I play a mix of genres including Rnb, Reggae, Top 40, and traditional Hawaiian music. While I love jamming covers, I also released my newest single “Smell the Roses” earlier this year. My original song is on all popular music streaming platforms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha, smooth would be ideal but being a musician comes with its own obstacles. It’s definitely a balancing act making something you love a career. I say starting off, I was a complete amateur.
I could barely play and sing at the same time, it was quite comical. At the first gig, I was so nervous that I played about 3x faster and ended up playing all my songs for the entire gig in my first set! Honestly, super humble beginnings but I am grateful to have those moments to look back on.
Now each year, I just want to improve as a musician, bandleader, and songwriter. I’ve found most of my growth comes from being in uncomfortable situations.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Picking between a business and creative artist was quite difficult when I alternate wearing both hats! Business-wise, I am a band leader booking a variety of musicians and dancers for shows. I organize the setlist between musicians and book all corporate and public shows as well as payroll.
I offer a variety of packages from solo ukulele — all the way up to a lively 6 piece band. On another note, I also offer a Luau show including all the works! My luau show includes live music, hula dancers, and Siva Afi Fire Knife! Music is my full-time career and I am grateful to have such a thriving business.
As an artist, I express myself through my original music. Recently, I’ve put out a song called “Smell the Roses” that has played across the world. Original music is much more intimate for me. The lyrics are personal as well as the experiences.
I love the vulnerability of it all and plan to release an album in the near future.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Some resources that have helped me along the way are other artists’ podcasts.
I truly enjoy listening to Tiny Desk Concerts, Sofar Sounds, and live shows. It inspires me and also helps set future goals for shows. Some of my favorite artists are HER, the Green, Eli Mac, Beyonce, and plenty more.
