Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Johnson.
Hi Izzy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved here in 2016 from Nashville to start my hairstyling career. I love my hometown, but the beach has always called my name. My sister and her family were here, but I didn’t know anyone else. I accepted a salon job and drove down with just clothes in my car, ready to figure it out as I went. I worked at the salon for about 5 years and became an independent stylist. Opening a studio alone is intimidating, but I knew it’d be worth it. The process was complex and came with plenty of speed bumps along the way, but if I had to do it again, I’d do it all the same. I have a clientele I love inside and out, a couple of side hustles, and the work-life balance I’ve always wanted. I’m grateful for all the blood, sweat, and tears.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It could have been a smoother road. Building a clientele in a new town with no connections was a big task. I would go to bars after work and walk up to random people to ask if I could do their hair. You have to get comfortable with rejection at the beginning. Becoming an independent stylist came with its struggles. Learning taxes, scheduling, POS systems, bookkeeping, insurance, LLCs, etc., was foreign to me. I feel very proud of myself for not giving up.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with your work?
I’m an independent hairstylist specializing in blonding and extensions. My goal with each service is to offer a relaxing, stress-free environment and hair that excites you. I focus on low-maintenance but high-impact hair. From in-depth consultations to scalp massages and a complete style at the end, the process is well thought out and meaningful. Most clients come to me for the bright blonde they never felt they could have- and I like the challenge.
What matters most to you? Why?
Three things tie for first place: my family, dogs, and personal growth. My family means the world to me and will always come first. My “built-in best friends” keep me grounded and laughing no matter what. My dogs, you get it. As for personal growth, therapy is fantastic. I’ve learned so much about myself and how to show up better in this world for myself and others. I went through a few complex life events that taught me that I can’t control certain things but can control how I react to them. Therapy and personal growth have brought me peace and understanding that I will always cherish.
