Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Cappelen.
Hi Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I developed a passion for photography after taking elective photography classes in high school. My teacher showed us the ins and outs of our DSLR cameras and even taught us to develop film in the school’s dark room. We would take field trips to places in our community to photograph people and things, and I always found myself more drawn to living subjects rather than still-life photos. I was that friend in college who did not go anywhere without her camera, snapping candid and fun memories for my friends and me. After graduation, I took a marketing job for a real estate brokerage, and I began taking photos of listings for the agents as a side business. From there, I branched into portrait photography, eventually dove head-first into wedding photography, and never looked back.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been easy, but I am very blessed to be in my current position. My business blew up in the first few weeks of launching Evergreen Photo Co. because of a viral Instagram Reel that surpassed a million views. That single video led to a fully booked out 2023 – I never expected it to take off as quickly as it did, so learning how to be the business owner, the face of the company, marketer, and photographer had its challenges because it was all new to me.
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I offer digital and 35mm film photography services for all things love: weddings, elopements, engagements, proposals, couples! I believe in the power of unposed and unscripted moments that reflect the genuine connection between my couples. My documentary-style approach allows me to capture the organic interactions, shared laughter, and heartfelt emotions that unobtrusively reveal the actual depth of their love. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to storytelling, I offer a personalized experience for every client that beautifully portrays their unique love story. I encourage my clients to be fully present in the moment while I capture the candid moments and authentic beauty unfolding around them. I believe that every person should be framed in the moments they feel like their best selves, and it is so important to me that I form genuine connections with my clients because having someone they can consider a friend behind the camera allows them to feel so much more comfortable and natural in front of my lens.
What matters most to you? Why?
Every couple is unique, and their wedding should reflect their style and vision. I work closely with my clients to understand their preferences and desired aesthetics. I strive to create a comfortable and relaxed environment, allowing them to be fully present and enjoy their day. Whether they are planning an intimate elopement or a grand wedding celebration, I always capture the essence of their day in a way that tells their love story through photos.
