Rising Stars: Meet Derrick R Kearney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick R Kearney.

Derrick’s R Kearney

Hi Derrick R., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the spring of 2016, I was moving some items around my old bedroom at my mom’s house in Palatka. There was an open can of paint that knocked over onto two crates of vinyl records. After the initial shock, I cleaned up what I could and set those records aside for a few years. There was a need in my life to deal with some painful and traumatic experiences that left me feeling broken. I’ve always been creative, but everything clicked once I found a way to express that with fluid abstract paintings. That was the summer into winter of 2019. I dove in fully with recording process videos for every attempt, and the following spring, I started sharing the finished creations once dry with collectors. At this point, the artwork has travelled the world in so many different ways. I am grateful for being able to share what has been a genuinely spiritual journey of discovery with each creation.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge has been keeping the content monster happy. Make sure that it is well-fed and that you have said everything at the correct times. Social media is an ever-changing world, especially with AI. Make a point to manage it while managing yourself and your offline life. As I say this, the wearing of multiple hats is the challenge. It would be a breeze if I only had to deal with social media all day. You can substitute in accounting, photography, painting, or whatever other hat I might wear for that day. The challenge becomes doing several things at once and ensuring the content monster is happy.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Glow in the dark blacklight reflective colour shifting metalling space odyssey planetary bliss fulfilment of fluid abstract happiness. I do traditional canvas paintings of all sizes, but I am known for my collection of repurposed 12″ vinyl record pours. These come with a special resin coating that will bring out some of the extras found in the paint mixture. I stick tiny bits of my soul into these as they are healing prayer sessions for humanity. Creative artistic expression has become a mantra for describing what I bring forward.

What do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy? Well, music is an excellent place to start. There is always some sound happening. I grew up with the family Baptist church choir that had my uncle James on piano. I played tuba throughout my school years along with chorus before discovering the world of turntablism and experimenting with some electronic production. But the more I enjoy hearing it. I found Prince in 1st grade, if that gives any indication. So now at home, it’s likely that I have on that or Green Day, an old Twiddle show, or an excellent new drum and bass producer or random DJ set. Even now, trying to type this, I have my muse in the other room playing a hand drum. She makes me happy. My lady is truly calm during this crazy storm around us. I love being able to spend time in nature. I’m into taking pictures at sunrises along the shore and sunsets at the beach. The cool thing in Florida is that you can do both within the same day. God makes me happy. I hug trees. Hugging trees feels like you’re hugging God, which makes me happy. A few other things include watching professional wrestling, enjoying a good meal, conversations with family and friends, and petting cats.
