Rising Stars: Meet Cat Tortorici of Jacksonville, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Tortorici.

Hi Cat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been interested in different forms of art and creativity. I’ve always loved vibrant colors and capturing different environments, but I also have a soft spot for dramatic black-and-white images. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at summer camp and would bring a camera with me on hikes to document what I was seeing. In high school, I joined yearbook, which helped me get more serious about photography. I became interested in sports photography, which eventually led me into music photography. Over the years, that grew into photographing all kinds of events, and more recently I’ve enjoyed exploring weddings and film photography as well. Today, I mostly focus on capturing people and moments as they happen and telling the story of an event through my images.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think one of the biggest challenges has been developing a style while being interested in so many different subjects. I enjoy photographing a lot of different things, which can make it difficult to figure out exactly what your work is. For a while I felt like I needed to pick one lane, but over time I’ve realized that no matter what I’m photographing, I’m drawn to the atmosphere of a place and the people in it. Taking photos is the fun part, but marketing yourself, networking, and handling everything behind the scenes comes with its own learning curve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I focus a lot on the environment and overall feel of an event. Whether it’s a sporting event, concert, festival, or community gathering, I’m interested in more than just the main action. I like capturing the fans, the athletes or musicians, and the small moments happening around them that people might not always notice. Those details help tell the full story. I’m most proud when someone can look at a photo and remember exactly how that moment felt. I think what sets me apart is that I try to capture the whole experience, not just the highlight moments.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has definitely played a role. Some opportunities have come from being in the right place at the right time or meeting people who connected me with other opportunities. At the same time, I think you have to be ready when those moments happen. A lot of the experiences I’ve had started with a simple conversation or chance connection, and then grew from there.
