Rising Stars: Meet Carson Kapp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carson Kapp.

Hi Carson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Magic happened growing up under a tree canopy on a hillside in Birmingham, AL. We had the freedom to explore the creeks and play. My artwork intends to connect with that child-like spirit filled with freedom, creativity, and imaginative play. In my former professional life, I was an architect. My work was commercial, massive in scale, and complex. As an architect, I was concerned with structure, safety, and function. Artistically, I am one curly-headed girl playing under the tree canopy.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
I learned resilience every 10 years because architecture is tied to the economy. When a downturn in the economy led to my being laid off, I picked up a paintbrush. My early adolescent trauma of losing my father contributed to self-destructive behaviors. By embracing my beautiful monsters, I overcame my self-destructive behaviors.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
My artwork includes three main features: figurative (including animals), architecture (buildings and abstract structures), and nature. I create abstract landscapes by playing with the magic of color to explore my imagination’s wonky, whimsical, energetic worlds. Also, in each painting l seek to convey the spirit of the land or the person/animal I am portraying. For this, I use pareidolia, a process where the painting is rotated in all 4 directions to find hidden shapes. You may have practiced finding pareidolia as my sister and I did as children, lying in the clover and finding shapes in the clouds above. Pareidolia sets my artwork apart from others and I am continually astonished by what I discover using
this process.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
New Smyrna Beach, FL, is one of America’s top 100 small art towns. Artistic opportunities are endless, with numerous locations to take classes, galleries for collectors, and the first Saturday art walk for socializing. The city’s downfall is that it is often crowded because we are also a beach town with small-town charm.
