Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Sims.
Hi Caroline, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story actually starts pretty young. I am adopted from Kazakhstan, and my older sister is also adopted. She has the most beautiful long curly mane I’ve ever seen in my life. I started doing her hair when I was able to move my fingers. I braided her a lot, I styled her and her friends for prom when I was just 10 years old. From that point up until I graduated high school a lot of people contacted me about styling during prom time, homecoming etc, but if I’m being completely honest I never really saw myself being a hairstylist.
I thought I was going to do the straight and narrow; I was brought to Florida to play lacrosse at Flagler College in the fall of 2021. Very quickly I realized that the college journey wasn’t for me and once I conversed with my parents that this wasn’t for me, they immediately said I needed to go to hair school. Once I started in Aveda Jacksonville in the fall of 2022, it felt like everything had fallen into place. I was a very average student growing up, solid A’s & B’s but if I’m honest I spent much more time studying hair videos. In the hair world, absolutely everything is a learning experience for me because my brain just works in this creative way. I received my Cosmetology license in July of 2023, started at Studio Sage Hair and Headspa in Jax Beach and I truly couldn’t be happier
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been an interesting road! Obviously as an entrepreneur, your entire business is up to you and how much you’re willing to pour into it. I think the biggest struggle within this industry is staying consistent. Consistently posting on Instagram, consistently being the best you you can be for your clients, staying up to date with the newest education, and probably the easiest; consistently turning out beautiful hair!!
My biggest struggle is just simply getting my name out there more. I am so so lucky because I do love this career more than anything I’ve ever done. Even if I do struggle or have a bad month, I take a breath and remember that this truly is not work for me, hair honestly invigorates me
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now I specialize in creative haircuts, and dimensional color! I would say I’m most known in the salon for a superb haircut. Like I mentioned before, I had a lot of practice with my sister on super thick, curly, dense hair. A lot of the clientele I have been attracting are people with that gorgeous thick hair, and they absolutely love the haircuts I give! I’m most known for a sickening layered cut with a beautiful bouncy blowout to top it off
What I’m most proud of honestly is my passion, and eye for hair. I want every single client that sits in my chair to know how much I love my job, how much I appreciate the trust that is put into me to do their hair, and that all of my energy is dedicated to them. I want the clients to view their appointments as an entire experience. Yes we have amazing chats, but you also receive a great head massage and hot towel for all my shampoos (it’s the best part!). I think little things set me apart; when I am massaging I am setting an intention of I want the clients to relax, I want you to not even think about what you’re doing after this appointment because you’re almost in a trance!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My best advice for baby stylists would be to take anything and everything. Don’t shut yourself off too early because this industry is constantly changing and growing, and take as much education as you can. You want to be able to have as many tools in your toolbox to be able to tackle anything that comes in your chair.
Something I’m also still working on is getting really comfortable in front of a camera, talking to the camera, voiceovers. Because the quicker you can get used to it the better your content will be and once you’re taking real true clients you can make content like it’s nothing!
