Today we’d like to introduce you to Camelia Kelly
Hi Camelia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before COVID, I worked in Nutrition/Public Health field. Once COVID hit much like everyone else I felt economic uncertainties and decided that I needed to supplement my income as a safety net, just in case I lost my job. I began looking at the options of real estate or hair, the latter being a long time love and I had a natural instinct for. Being a single mom/divorced at the time with little to no village I picked the option where I could be there for my kids at the same time. I proceeded with taking a Sisterlocks certification class in 2021. Sisterlocks is a hair style popular among African/American women which I had myself. Once I took that certification I began offering service in a home salon setting part time. After a year I took the leap to quit my 9-5 and offer services as a Sisterlocks Consultant full time time out of my home. Not long after my sister and another loctician joined me in home offering to even more ladies. Once I realized we were bursting at the seams I took another leap to aquire a commercial space at 1628 San Marco Blvd for a more comfortable, professional setting for our clientele. We have now been at this location for a year and are looking to expand again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldnt say it has been a smooth road, much like all other entrepreneurs there is the constant feeling of uncertainty but I think it also fuels the drive to continue to work at and push forward to the vision. There are things you have to personally work through, such as imposter syndrome that is so common. There are business aspects you have to learn and seek out information on to make sure you are doing things the correct way which can be a challenge sometimes. Thankfully we have not experienced any undue hardship on our journey but we have definitely learned a lot of lessons along the way and they have made us come out more improved after each one.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are locticians, a loctician is a person who creates and maintain hair choice/way of wearing the hair called locs. Locs are formed in mostly curly hair by encouraging the hair to matt in a groomed way. There are several variations of this, the one we specialize in are called microlocks. These are very small in their sectioning and parting at the scalp. Locs are known and loved among African Americans due to its ability to transform the hair into a voluminous long mane. We are known as the go to loctician suite for tinylocs in Jax. We offer a line of loc hair care products Herlockscosmetics containing cleansing and moisturizing products. We also offer high standard training to future locticians as well as training on advanced techniques to existing locticians. People expect excellence in our work and our customer relations at Herlocksjax. We are most proud of the way we service our clientele, how satisfied they are with our work and how proud they are to say they are serviced by us. We are set apart because we create and maintaining these locs with a certain aesthetic, precision and standard that is recognizable by our followers/supporters in jax streets.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We have definitely been having a blast of servicing the mostly the Jacksonville Fl, area we have serviced ladies who travel to us several other states and cities as well. So we are overjoyed and grateful to work in our passion and help our clietele realize their hair dreams. Thank you for trusting us.
