Rising Stars: Meet Alvin King of Southside/Mandarin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvin King.

Hi Alvin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was introduced to money at an early age. Growing up in a middle-class household, unfortunately we did not talk about saving or investing money. At the age of 15 and after the passing of both of my parents, I was told that they left me a Trust Fund that I had access to when I turned 18. I had no clue what a Trust Fund was, other than the fact that it sounded like a lot of money! Three years later at the age of 18, I went into the bank and was handed a check (for what is comparable to today’s dollars) of $100,000.00. I did not receive any guidance from a bank professional at all. Therefore, with $100,000.00 burning a hole in my pocket, and absolutely no financial education, I proceeded to live the lifestyle that I thought was for the rich and famous, until the money ran out!

As I matured in my 20’s and 30’s, I experimented with credit cards and quickly learned about the implications of being in debt. After learning from my mistakes, I felt compelled to educate myself about how money really worked. I worked in the financial services industry specifically in banking, credit cards, and collections. After a few corporate job layoffs, I began working with a mentor who shared some basic financial concepts about how I could be financially independent, debt fee, and secure. I became a student and then I executed the principles learned to set a strong financial foundation to build financial wealth. Through my journey of learning, I also became interested in teaching others so that they can increase their financial literacy. and achieve their financial goals. Today with over 30 years of financial services experience, I am a licensed financial professional, and a financial educator with Wealthwave, the Money Books company. I teach people how their money works. it is my passion to help others set and achieve realistic financial goals in order to build wealth and create generational wealth.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles along the way were carrying around a lot of guilt for blowing through $100,000.00 that my parents had saved up for me. It was indeed my intention to make it up, however I was attempting to keep up a lifestyle by living about my means instead of being smart with my money. At one point early on, I decided to file bankruptcy, which gave me a clean slate, only to get back in debt a few years later.

The only struggle I face today is not getting in front of enough people to share How Money Works!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I teach financial literacy through workshops, masterclasses, seminars, and individual sessions. All of my consultations are complimentary. We provide a full financial review (Financial Needs Analysis) to everyone who desires. This analysis provides the financial blueprint showing where the client is currently, and how to arrive at they’re end goal of financial freedom. T

I am known for providing individuals with the 7 Money Milestones for financial success. These include, education, income protection, emergency fund, debt management, cash flow, building wealth, and protecting wealth.

I’m most proud of our approach to providing financial education first before recommending a solution. What sets me apart from others is that we do not charge a fee to consult with us no matter how often we meet. We believe that no family should be left behind, and most are not able to pay $300-$400 an hour to consult about their finances, which is what some other major firms do. Also, I build relationships with those I teach and consult with. They can contact me personally instead of calling a toll-free number and getting someone who does not even know you. I provide personalized service with each contact.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about our city is the potential to be a great place to thrive! What I like least is the fact that as large as we are land wise, there is not a lot of entertainment, arts, venues, etc. for every age group. It seems that it is becoming a place for retired individuals and not keeping the future generations engaged.
