We recently had the chance to connect with Megan Robertson and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the support team for Aveda Texture at Aveda’s biggest global hair show, Congress. When I first saw my name listed for texture, I had to do a double take—me on the texture team? The girl who spends most of her time doing blonding? I was both excited and proud to be chosen, but I’ll admit, a little nervous too.
In the end, it couldn’t have gone better. Stepping outside my comfort zone turned out to be so rewarding—I learned new skills, gained confidence, and had plenty of laughs along the way. The texture team brought so much energy (and a few dance parties) to Congress, and I had an absolute blast working alongside such a fun, talented group of people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Megan, and I’m the proud owner of three Aveda Lifestyle Salons across two states called Zinke Hair Studio—two in Florida and my original in Colorado. I’ve been in the beauty industry for nearly 20 years and have worn many hats along the way: assistant, busy stylist, educator, owner, mentor, and even hair show choreographer.
Today, I’ve stepped away from behind the chair to focus on running the business and leading my amazing teams. I’m also honored to serve as a Color Purefessional for Aveda, which allows me to share my passion for education and teach for the brand I love.
My journey began 14 years ago in Boulder, Colorado, when I opened our first Zinke Hair Studio alongside my mom, Jolene. We chose the name “Zinke”—my maiden name—as a nod to our family roots and the heart behind our business. Since then, we’ve learned, grown, and expanded, but our family spirit remains at the core of everything we do.
Now based in Florida, I’m not only focused on growing and supporting my three salon teams, but also on raising my two incredible daughters. After recently joining the support team for Aveda Congress, I’m excited about the possibility of doing more hair shows in the future and continuing to grow both personally and professionally.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I would say my experience at Van Michael Salons, where I began my career, taught me the most. As the top Aveda salon group in the country, it provided an incredible foundation. I started as an assistant and eventually moved onto the stylist floor, all while observing every aspect of the salon’s operations. At the time, I had no idea I would one day own my own company, but the lessons I learned there—from discipline and professionalism to artistry and client care—shaped who I am today. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to learn from some of the very best in the industry.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely—during Covid. Like so many salon owners, there were moments when I wanted to throw in the towel. It was such a difficult time to lead, with so much fear and uncertainty, and often I didn’t agree with the restrictions placed on us. Still, I did everything necessary to meet the public where they were.
It was during that season that I decided to take a massive leap—I moved to Florida, where my husband is from, to finally live by the water and embrace the beach life I had always dreamed of. Trusting my team and our GM to run the company, I chose to bring more joy and balance into my life. What I didn’t know at the time was that the move would lead to two new salons in Florida, while Colorado continued to thrive.
I’ve always loved the quote: “Leap, and the net will appear.” Following my gut has taught me that things often work out even better than you planned.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I deeply admire Shane Wolf, our new president at Aveda. Shane has a unique story with the brand—he worked alongside our founder, Horst, years ago, and has now returned to his roots with an incredible sense of purpose. What stands out most to me is not his position, but his character. He leads with genuine passion and is completely aligned with Aveda’s mission.
When you speak with Shane, he gives you his full attention. You never feel like he’s distracted or rushing to move on to someone else—he makes you feel seen, valued, and heard. That humility and presence are rare in leadership, especially at his level. He truly cares about the people who make up this brand and carries no ego about being “the president.”
I believe Shane is going to take Aveda to new heights, not just because of his experience, but because of the authenticity, compassion, and vision he brings to his leadership. That’s the kind of character I admire most.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I know I have strong systems in place and my businesses can run smoothly without me. After nearly 20 years in the industry—and 14 of those building and growing my own brand—I’ve learned that true peace comes from creating structure, empowering your team, and trusting the process.
For me, it’s not about stepping away from responsibility, but about knowing I’ve built something sustainable that doesn’t depend on me being in the building every day. That freedom allows me to dream bigger, to be more present with my family, and to pursue the experiences I’ve always wanted—like traveling more and soaking in new cultures—while still watching my teams thrive back home.
Peace, for me, is the balance of knowing my work is in good hands while also giving myself permission to enjoy life outside of it.
