Meet Tyler White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler White.

Tyler White

Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tyler White; I have been a barber for over 2 years. I am home-based(for now) and located on the south side of Jacksonville. I started cutting hair after I graduated from high school in 2021. At first, I started cutting my hair. I kept getting messed up trying to find the right barbershop to go to. Then I started thinking, “Okay, I know how I want it; how hard could it be?” I bought my first pair of clippers from Family Dollar and started watching YouTube videos. After practicing on myself and my brothers for a few months, I became a mobile barber. I did not have my own space, nor would the barbershops I wanted to go to let me come because I did not have a license. Being a mobile barber showed me a whole different side of barbering. I could travel and see other things every day, including new places. It became something I love to do. Even though people were telling me, “Cutting hair is only a hobby,” “You are not going be able to live off that,” and “Being mobile is not safe,” I had to know that God had something better planned for me; just keep going. I was only mobile in my first year of cutting, and it went better than expected. After working and gaining clientele all year, I quit my job and became a full-time mobile barber. That year alone has taught me so much about my business and what could come from it. My and I got our first place in 2023, right before my 20th birthday. So, I finally had my own space to cut. I’m still only mobile, but I let people come to my spot to get cut. The first 2 months of my being a full-time barber went exceedingly off the charts. I was out cutting 7 days a week, almost booked every day. In May of 2023, I was in a bad car accident that totaled my car; I was fine, thank God. These past 9+ months, I have been working on gaining clientele day by day. After I could not be mobile anymore, I lost a lot of clients due to needing more transportation. I went to barber school and got a job to get back on my feet. Today, in February of 2024, I am still a full-time barber, home-based, and gaining clientele. I am not a “booked-up barber,” but I am in a better place and gaining more clientele. I will make a mobile comeback and take it over again. As my journey continues, I know to keep praying and have faith in God cause I know for every door He closes, He opens another one.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth. It was time I wanted to hang up the Clippers and get another job, but God had other plans. I had problems getting the needed stuff, mainly because of my financial situation. I had gotten into a car accident, not being able to be mobile anymore; I lost half of my clients and was barely making it. God shows up when you need Him the most.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My barber’s name is Ty1erthebarber, and I’m self-taught. I specialize in sharp lines and blurry fades. I cut women and kids and do designs. I get increasingly proud of myself after every cut and every day. I’m open 7 days a week and give every client my best.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
A stranger will become a client before your friends or family. God got you through it all!
