Meet TyLee Smith of Orlando FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to TyLee Smith.

Hi TyLee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Farrockaway, New York and moved to Virginia after the passing of my father at the age of 6 due to gun violence. During my time in New York my mom use to always put me in local talent shows where I would go on to win 3 city wide events with music that was original that I recorded in my Grandfathers recording studio. I would say that’s where I found my love for music. My grandfather, Darnell Simpkins was a lead singer and guitarist in a funk group that created a major 1970’s hit called “The Whip”. He was also a songwriter who co-wrote songs with Teddy Riley, Keith Sweat and change the hip hop culture by mixing RnB vocals and Rap in one of LL Cool J’s greatest hits. Just watching the incredible things he was able to do during his music career created a spark for me to go and do the same for myself. Since then I’ve gone on to become a Recording academy (Grammy’s) member and have created songs that’s landed television placements on TBS, TNT and MAX networks on the All Elite Wrestling television show by creating entrance music for professional wrestlers. The biggest known was by AEW tag team “Private Party” titled “Flex On Em” which since being released has amassed over a 1 million streams on all platforms.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being in the music industry is not a simple task at all. Being someone who is extremely introverted, I’ve learned that it takes a lot of networking and sacrifice to make anything magical happen. You here the philosophy that to master a craft it takes 10,000 hours to do so and that is true however, being a musician, songwriter, producer or engineer honing your skills is just the first 10,000 you have to do. But what most people don’t realize is that you have to put in another 10,000 by also understanding the music business side of things as well. For most that’s where things start to become discouraging. Understanding branding, marketing and PR and how in the beginning phases your gonna have to do a lot of these things yourself if you don’t have the support of a team that’s all sold out on this dream the same way that you are. When I first started I wanted to give up and quit a thousand times over. I’ve been told “No” more times than “Yes” but the reward of facing all those “No’s” makes it all worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a national televised recording artist, songwriter and engineer. I’m known for being a Recording Academy member and creating multiple projects on All Elite Wrestling that’s televised on TBS, TNT and MAX. Im most proud of the fact that I never gave up on chasing after my dreams. I would say it’s the fact that I’m a multi-genre creator that has created songs in Hip Hop, RnB, Afrobeats, Pop and Country.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I haven’t been in Florida long enough to say what I don’t like about it. But I will say this heat is definitely something that’s gonna take some getting used to.
