Meet Travis Luther of St Augustine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Luther.

Hi Travis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Our story begins as a group of guys that met through our local Fly shop. When I was hanging my artwork in that shop, Luke was the manager, and Matt was the product manager. Through about two years, we built a solid relationship between us. That fly shop eventually closed, leaving a space in the local community. I continued doing my artwork from home; Matt and Luke started the old city guide service. After a few years of us building our businesses (Travis Luther art and Old City guide service), we would reminisce on events and activities from the old shop. We all agreed that we could fill that void in the community and open a new Fly shop based around fly fishing in the local area. I needed a studio gallery space, and the old city guide service needed a home to book charters. We agreed it would do a good hybrid business for all of us to combine and open a shop that would complement my fishing art and their fly fishing guide service.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Honestly, it’s been a pretty smooth road, considering all the typical obstacles to opening a small business. We’ve done an excellent job of reinvesting in the business and making group decisions while balancing our friendship and business life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
This has two parts, my artwork and the personality brought to the shop. The second half is the guide service, the relationships that that’s built, and the clientele. It also brings into our small business. I’ve always focused my artwork around the Fishing community, merging two passions. I enjoy doing functional painted art like rods, racks, wine, racks coasters, and other functional items. I have quite an extensive series of 3-D and 2-D paintings and some woodworking Mixed in. Old city guide service is very similar. It’s waking up every day having to make decisions based on Weather, Tide, and fish behavior patterns; it requires creativity and dedication to put clients in a position to present a fly and sight-fish.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We take pride in serving our fly fishing community and how we treat clientele. Treat our beginner and experienced customers with the same level of passion. For our events, we enjoy working with other small businesses like Kaliburger and Osprey Tacos – to mention a few.
