Meet Theresa McAfee of DogJogJax /HappiPaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa McAfee.

Hi Theresa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
I began my business in 2009 as DogJogJax, wanting to incorporate my love for dogs and running; however, I quickly learned that I was spread too thin and spent all my time in the car driving to and from pet visits over the city. I slowly grew it into a specialty boutique service of a small network of private homes that welcome clients into their homes while the pet owner travels. We provide an all-inclusive crate/kennel-free environment so that pet owners can relax, knowing their dog(s) are not anxious while apart. We stay in touch with the client with pictures and videos. We offer flexible pickup and drop-off times. (we do not add upcharges for dispensing medication or outside time, as the pets get a liberal amount of leisure outside time at all of our responsible pet sitters’ homes).

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While it was not a smooth road, the obstacles that were met have been slowly overcome one at a time. For example, creating a custom website where users can log in and request a sitter, and the respective sitter can then accept or deny the reservation request based on their availability has taken 3 website makeovers to accomplish (and thousands of dollars). Another difficult barrier to overcome is finding trustworthy, responsible sitters that will uphold our consistently high level of customer service and pet care, striving to treat every dog as though they are our own while they are with us. Covid was another barrier to our small business, as many people stopped traveling, began working from home, and no longer needed our services. While business slowed dramatically in 2020-21, it has slowly rebounded as clients started to travel again. They feel safe leaving their pups with our sitters.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The company name is DogJogJax (IRS tax ID number); however, we began marketing as HappiPaw in 2020 because we are growing outside of Jacksonville. We offer private, in-home pet-sitting services, welcoming clients into our homes and treating them to a home away from home environment while they are with us. Our rates are comparable to a kennel environment; however, our services are far superior since our clients get a lot of play and outside time, not limited at all, and since we are a small network of private homes. We do not have strict business hours that must be adhered to for pick up and drop off.

Before we go, can you share it with us?
We always look for safe, responsible pet lovers willing to welcome clients into their homes. I have been a dental hygienist for 30 years and founded this business, of which I am very proud of its growth and the opportunity it has allowed for my sitters and myself.
