Meet Tameka Walker of Jacksonville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tameka Walker

Hi Tameka , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From Frustration to Freedom: My Journey
Ever stood in front of the mirror, tangled hair in one hand, countless failed products scattered around you, wondering why nothing seems to work? I’ve been there.

And that was just the beginning of my midlife awakening.

I’m Tameka Walker, founder of Koshajay Essentials. After 20 years at a job where I’d hit the ceiling so hard I could see the cracks—denied promotions despite my dedication, struggling to get time off approved because of “staffing issues,” watching less experienced colleagues climb past me—I knew something had to change.

I was a 30-something woman with natural hair, a demanding career, and a growing sense that I deserved more. Sound familiar?

The Big Chop That Changed Everything
My journey to creating Koshajay Essentials began in 2013 when I took the brave step of doing the “Big Chop.” This wasn’t just a haircut—it was a declaration of independence and the first step toward discovering who I truly was.

With my new natural hair came new challenges. My scalp and hair needed solutions that simply didn’t exist on the market. This sent me diving deep into the world of Ayurvedic herbs, researching and experimenting to create formulations that could deliver maximum moisture and promote healthy hair growth.

Finding My Path Through Holistic Education
In 2018, my search for better solutions led me to The Studios at Florida School of Holistic Health. There, I not only expanded my knowledge but found an amazing holistic instructor, Ms. Donna McGhee who would change everything. Under her guidance, I laid the groundwork for what would soon become Koshajay Essentials—mastering the art and science of natural product formulation and discovering how to harness the power of herbs to create solutions that actually worked.

By 2019, I had completed my holistic health training and officially established Koshajay Essentials as an LLC. That same year, I proudly debuted my natural hair care line at local events like the Jacksonville Melanin Market, showcasing products focused on healthy hair and pure ingredients.

Growing While Giving Back
My vision expanded in 2020 when I participated in The Butterfly Effect Gala and the Karima Foundation’s “Crawl, Walk, Run: From Teens to Queens, Inc” event. These opportunities allowed me to raise awareness for autoimmune diseases while supporting scholarships—because Koshajay Essentials has always been about more than just great products; it’s about creating positive change.

Building a Physical Presence
The year 2023 marked another milestone when we joined 1Bridge Connect (a retail fulfillment and business center provided by the fabulous business guru, Autumn Redding), securing a brick-and-mortar location at 25 E. Beaver Street in Jacksonville. This space has become not just a store but a community hub where we can share our passion for natural hair and body care directly with customers and other small businesses.

Building While Balancing
Let’s keep it real—I’m still at my 9-to-5. I’m building this dream during lunch breaks, late nights, and weekends. When they deny my time-off requests, I’m formulating products in my mind during meetings. Every “no” at work becomes fuel for building something that’s entirely mine.

This isn’t just about hair products. It’s about creating freedom, one bottle at a time.

The Evolution
What started as a quest to solve my own hair struggles has blossomed into something much bigger. As I entered perimenopause (hello, hot flashes and mood swings!), I realized our bodies need different support during these transitions that nobody seems to talk about.

Now, Koshajay Essentials is expanding to address the specific needs of women in midlife—navigating perimenopause, menopause, and the mental health challenges that often come with these profound physical changes.

Unstoppable Growth
From 2024 onward, I’m on a mission to make Koshajay Essentials unstoppable! I’m continuously enhancing my business acumen through programs with Jax Bridges (a Jax Chamber small business initiative) and Beaver Street Enterprises. This knowledge helps me perfect our line of top-quality hair and body care products that cater to the whole family.

– Tameka Walker, Founder/CEO

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, it’s never been a smooth road, trust me. There were definitely moments when I felt like I was running in circles. From the frustration of dealing with bad hair days to navigating a career that just wasn’t moving forward, I hit more than a few bumps along the way. But, honestly? Every obstacle made me work harder and get clearer on what I wanted.

From struggling with products that didn’t work for my hair to balancing a 9-to-5 while building Koshajay, it’s been tough. But you know what? All that frustration is what got me here. Hard work really does pay off—and now I’m building something that’s all mine, while empowering the community. Being an entrepreneur is not for the weak or week. 🙂 It wasn’t easy, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an artist and creator of natural hair, skin, and body care products, I’m known for creating formulas that actually work—products that nourish, heal, and enhance your natural beauty, from the inside out. I focus on real ingredients, real solutions, and real care. It’s not just about selling a product; it’s about making people feel heard and seen, especially when it comes to the unique needs of natural hair and skin.

What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come, from my own hair struggles to now being able to help others embrace their natural beauty with products that work for them. I’m especially proud of how Koshajay Essentials has grown into something that supports women at every stage of life, from hair care to hormone changes during perimenopause and menopause. It’s a mix of beauty, wellness, and empowerment all in one.

What sets me apart? It’s that personal touch. Every formula comes from my own experiences and deep research, not just industry trends. I take the time to understand what people actually need, and then I create products that genuinely help. Plus, I’m all about holistic care—empowering people to take control of their beauty and health, using the purest natural ingredients possible. You won’t find a formula here that hasn’t been carefully crafted with love and purpose.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Oh, I’ve definitely taken some major risks—some were scary, and others were downright nerve-wracking, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I don’t always think of myself as a “risk-taker,” but I’ve learned that sometimes, you have no choice but to leap and trust that you’ll land on your feet.

Right now, I’m still at my 9-to-5, but honestly, I’ve been seriously contemplating leaving. Job security here in Florida feels pretty shaky—like, they’ll just find someone else the minute you’re gone. That’s part of what’s pushing me to take the leap with Koshajay Essentials. I’m realizing more and more that my time and energy are better spent building something of my own, something I can control and believe in.

One of the biggest risks I see myself taking soon is fully committing to Koshajay Essentials and leaving my job. I’ve got the steady paycheck, benefits, and security right now, but it’s just not fulfilling me anymore. I feel like I’m stuck in a cycle, and the more I think about it, the more I know I have to make the tough decision to go all in. It’s terrifying, knowing I’d be giving up a steady income for a dream that could fail. But deep down, I know this is the moment things need to shift for me. Sometimes, you have to bet on yourself.

Another big leap I’ve taken recently was investing in a physical location for Koshajay Essentials. It wasn’t just about getting a storefront; it was about creating a space where I could connect directly with my community and show them that this dream is real. No guarantees, no promises, but I believed in the vision. Sure, I still have the fear of it failing, but there’s also that excitement of what could be if I push through.

To me, risk isn’t about being reckless—it’s about growth. It’s about pushing yourself beyond what feels comfortable and making decisions based on what you believe is possible, not just what’s safe. Every risk I’ve taken has brought me closer to where I am today. It’s not easy, but I wouldn’t have learned as much without those leaps of faith. So, yeah, right now it’s scary, but I feel like if you want to see what you’re truly capable of, you’ve got to take those risks and trust the process.
