Today we’d like to introduce you to Sistah Lu.
Hi Sistah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I think my love for music started with my gma. She taught me how to play piano when I was just a little girl, and my love just evolved from there. I started to explore several instruments and then I discovered my voice. Though I wouldn’t dare compare my voice to a great like Whitney, Mariah or Patty, when I combine my voice with my energetic personality, I realize that I am this amazing artist, and I “wow” with everything that I got.
As a female growing up in a Caribbean, one of the things that was always important to me was pleasing my mom. She wanted me to be a nurse, just like my grandmother. So I became a nurse. I am a naturally caring person, so this came naturally to me. Through the years, I worked as a nurse while doing shows on the side. Though my nursing profession pays the bills and makes it possible for me to do what I do as an entertainer, I would give it up tomorrow for the opportunity to go on tour full time and bring joy and happiness to all those who attend my concerts and shows.
My biggest supporters through out my journey have always been my family and closest friends. They have always attended all my shows and every time I feel like quitting, they tell me never to quit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth, but it has been steady. I worked hard for the longest time to be a performer. I started out doing smaller gigs and eventually moved to performing at shows, festivals and events. I never really sought out fame or fortune. I just wanted to be able to offer the world an opportunity to forget their problems and replace it with a moment of positive energy.
I am arguably my biggest obstacle. I am very hard on myself. Often times, I have felt I was not good enough to be able to do this professionally. However, there is something inside of me. I have this inner drive and spark that keeps pushing me back onto the stage. The truth is, I really love the energy I get from performing in front of a crowd. I really enjoy seeing people having a good time because of my artistry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
“Hey y’all. It’s me, ya girl. Sistah Lu” I am a singer, performer, song writer and legend in the making. I am the lead singer and face of Island Powerhouse band, an authentic Caribbean band right here in Jacksonville, FL. I specialize in Caribbean music genres like reggae, calypso, soca and more. However, if you ask me where my heart is, I am a soca girl!
I am known for my larger than life voice, big bright costumes and performances that make you want to dance and sing along every time.
I am most proud of my ability to take a crowd from uninterested and sitting, to up dancing and singing during my performances. I also always remember my humble beginnings. No event is too small. I just love to connect with people.
I think what sets me apart from the rest is my performances are universal. Music is a language of love and unity and I feel no matter where you come from, if you attend one of my shows you will leave smiling, happy and tired from dancing.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If you would like to connect with me you can follow me on all social media platforms. That is the best way to keep up with everything that I am working on and to see dates and times for my next show. For business inquiries, please email me at [email protected].
