Meet Nichole Clark of Mandarin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Clark.

Hi Nichole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a curly-haired hairdresser getting butchered haircuts from my coworkers. I decided to “cheat” on my salon and go get a curly cut from the local curly salon. I ended up going to work at the curly place and have done curly hair ever since.
I absolutely love the vibe of my curly clients, I love not having to do round brush blow dries, I love teaching people how to care for their curls to get the best look that they can out of them. I love it when someone says “I’ve never seen my hair this curly” or “thank you so much for showing me what my hair can do.”
Being a salon owner was never the dream, but when I moved to Jacksonville it seemed like we really needed a curly salon here. I was so booked and busy within less than a year of coming here and that got the ball rolling. It took me a long time to find the right spot but we found our little hidden gem in mandarin and it’s great!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nooo. It was so hard finding a location. Being such a small operation, there was going to be too much overhead in a traditional retail space. The commercial spaces that I was finding we’re all telling me either No, we don’t want Salon in here, no we don’t want you to have to do the kind of remodeling work that would be needed. It took me two years to find my spot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We do ONLY curly hair. There’s lots of hairdressers out there that say they specialize in curly hair, but when you look at their business pages, their websites or their Instagram profile profiles, you see no pictures of curly hair. We do Curly hair exclusively. We have learned over several years that even in the Curly world not every hair is the same and not everyone can be treated the same. When you really niche down and do only one type of hair you were able to really understand the differences even within that type and really cater your advice and hair care, your styling techniques and your cutting techniques to the individual in front of you.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had lots of mentors that have helped along the way.
The owners of the first salon I worked at taught me so much about all different kinds of hair for the seven years that I was with them.
Katrina brought me into my first curly job, and that was absolutely life-changing.
Pat and Stephanie, two local salon owners who gave a chance to someone newly transplanted to the area.
Kayla, my realtor, believe it or not was a huge part of me being able to open my shop. She was the most supportive, patient, answered every question I had, looked at so many spaces with me over the course of two years, gave me so much advice on details of opening the business that I believe were above and beyond her scope. I am ever ever ever so grateful for her.
