Meet Mike Muto of Submission Fishing Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Muto.

Mike Muto

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I have fished since childhood, and as an adult, I also began my journey toward a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2020, with my BJJ gym closed, I turned more and more to fishing the bays with my local fishing club as an activity. From submitting opponents on the mat, I turned to submitting fish with slow-pitch jigging. Eventually, with the overlap between the art of Jiu-Jitsu and the art of fishing, I decided to blend my two passions and create Submission Fishing Co., dedicated to the lifelong pursuit of mastery of the art and skill of fishing. Slow-pitch jigging is a technique not traditionally used in the bays of San Diego for our kind of fish. It took a lot of work for my style on the tackle store shelves, which was very hard, so I started making my own to sell online and in stores. The audience of my YouTube show/podcast has been so supportive, and as we grow our brand, the technique and the jigs are helping anglers get a bit from California to Florida and states in between.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Our growing pains have been mostly related to scaling and managing our supply chain. It’s been fun learning how to grow as we add tackle stores and customers to our tribe. We’re dialing in our processes and systems to become black belts in business and fishing. We welcomed our first child in the brand’s early days and moved from San Diego to Florida. The chaos of those days taught us how resilient and strong we truly are with our community.

We’ve been impressed with Submission Fishing Co., but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Submission Fishing Co. helps fishermen who want to earn a bite. Our wide selection of high-quality jigs has been hand-picked to attract the bite from fish from lakes to bays to deep offshore waters. We’re in it for the life-long journey to our black belt in fishing, and our mission is to help other anglers on the path, too. Our community of fishermen pursues excellence along with us, and we’re grateful our education and gear can play a part in making their fishing more successful. Whether we’re fishing the Micro Sumo and Assassin for bass or inshore redfish, the mammoth Ogre and Samurai for bluefin tuna 50 miles away from shore, or the Javelin and mid-sized Ogre for big bottom fish, these jigs work. Our slow-pitch jigs are versatile and practical for all kinds of fish in all types of water, with sizes ranging from 10g to 600g in multiple styles and colors. Their unique fluttering actions on the fall mimic different dying bait fish, and their flash on the retrieve is too tempting for fish to ignore. This is the only brand on the market that has matched our hooks, hardware, or paint quality. We are a premium jig for fishermen who care about quality.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Please share something that might surprise us.
I am a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Team Alliance.
