From a young age, I was known for being dependable and organized, often helping relatives and family friends with babysitting, dog sitting, and even cleaning and organizing their homes. These skills, along with the lessons I learned from my mother’s dedication to helping others, especially elders, laid the foundation for my business. However, the real motivation to start ‘Nene’s Neat Services’ came from my personal challenges.
In 2021, my life took a drastic turn when I found myself on probation after a single encounter led by anxiety and panic. This event upended my life, causing me to fall behind in school, lose my apartment, and eventually live in my car. Despite numerous setbacks, including job scams and financial difficulties, I refused to give up. I realized that the skills I had been honing for years could be the key to turning my life around.
With the support of my family, I launched ‘Nene’s Neat Services,’ a cleaning business in Jacksonville Fl, that allowed me to create a flexible schedule to continue my studies while rebuilding my life. Although the journey wasn’t easy, facing challenges like losing my car and all my supplies, I persisted with the help of loved ones and through dedication. In June 2024, I took a big step and officially licensed my business. Today, I continue to grow ‘Nene’s Neat Services,’ aiming to to reach new clients and balance my business with my personal life. My goal is to expand my business and make a positive impact on a larger scale.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been far from smooth, but each challenge has shaped the journey of ‘Nene’s Neat Services.’ One of the most significant obstacles I faced was the life-altering event in 2021 that led to my probation. This sudden shift turned my world upside down, causing me to fall behind in school and eventually forcing me to live in my car due to financial struggles.
Finding a stable job proved to be another hurdle. I encountered scams, like one that overdrafted my bank account by over $5,000, and physically demanding warehouse jobs that were detrimental to both my mental and physical health. Despite applying to numerous jobs daily, I faced rejection after rejection, which only added to the stress.
When I finally started my business, I faced a new set of challenges, including building a clientele from scratch and marketing myself effectively. Even when my clients loved my work, I struggled with consistent income and managing the expenses of running a business. The biggest setback came when I lost my car, which was not only my means of transportation but also housed all my cleaning supplies. The financial burden of trying to retrieve my car and replace my supplies was overwhelming.
Despite these obstacles, I never gave up. With the support of family and friends, I managed to keep my business going, even paying for ride services to reach clients. Each struggle has made me more resilient and determined to succeed, and I’m committed to overcoming any challenges that come my way.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories takes me back to the summer of 2017 when I visited Jamaica, the country where my father grew up, for the very first time. I remember feeling a sense of freedom that I had never experienced before. I spent my days exploring the beautiful beaches, riding horses along the shore, meeting and bonding with family members, and soaking in the vibrant culture.
I also have fond memories of petting my first goat and a donkey that was proudly wearing the flag of my father’s homeland. One of the most unforgettable experiences was walking down to the fresh water river behind my grandma’s house to bathe in broad daylight. It felt so liberating, even though I unexpectedly saw my dad there first, which added a funny twist to the experience.
I enjoyed picking apples straight from the tree, getting piggyback rides, watching the heavy rain from the balcony, and drinking straight from a coconut. What made it even more special was the limited internet access—it allowed me to fully immerse myself in the moment and create lasting memories with my family.
It was the feeling of being truly free, surrounded by nature, family, and new experiences. That’s the feeling I cherish the most and would love to experience again.
