Meet Katrina Winch & Kelly Gates of KORK Goods & Inspired By KORK

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Winch & Kelly Gates.

Hi Katrina Winch & Kelly Gates, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Kork began as a childhood dream shared by sisters and best friends, Kelly and Katrina. For as long as they can remember, they have shared a passion for interior design, style, and fashion, alongside the aspiration to one day open a business together.

While their families and professional lives flourished, the timing never seemed right to step away from their established careers. However, they never gave up on their goal, taking small steps over the years to lay the foundation for their own brand.

In 2020, amidst the global shift caused by the pandemic, Kelly and Katrina realized they were no longer fulfilled in their professions. They decided it was finally time to pursue their original passions and bring their childhood vision to life.

Inspired by the potential of eco-friendly materials, Kelly discovered cork—a sustainable material with endless possibilities for beautiful, high-quality products. Katrina immediately saw the potential, and cork became the cornerstone of their new venture. This path allows them to combine their creativity with a commitment to integrity and sustainability, contributing to a brighter future for their children.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Do not expect to create something and then simply wait for results. One mistake we made was investing a significant amount of money into a high-profile PR firm, expecting it would help us scale overnight.

In reality, growth is typically a marathon, not a sprint. Even a major breakthrough only lasts so long before the next trend emerges, especially given today’s short attention spans. I recommend seeking intentional, controlled growth instead. Passion is contagious; if you believe in yourself, your project, and your brand, others will too.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We make stylish, sustainable cork accessories & goods for all. For us, it’s about fashion AND more. It’s our goal to give back to the environment and our community, making the world a better place.

Designed with you (and the planet) in mind

Cork is always harvested, never cut down. Made from the bark of the cork oak tree, cork is one of the most sustainable materials available. The bark is collected by hand every 9–12 years, leaving the original tree healthy and intact. Between these harvests, the bark entirely grows back; cork oak trees can live for up to 300 years, regenerating their bark several times throughout their lifespans.

Furthermore, cork is completely biodegradable and easily recyclable without producing any toxic residues. Whenever possible, KORK uses recycled cork to create our products.

We are also a proud member of 1% for the Planet, which means a percentage of each sale goes directly toward environmental conservation.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, we always had a deep love for interior design and fashion. We consistently expressed our creativity through our everyday outfits and by frequently rearranging and redecorating our bedrooms.
