Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Sow.
Hi Jules, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, I spent most of my youth between bilingual schools in Dakar. After graduating high school, I moved to Fairfax, Virginia, where I enrolled as an International Student at George Mason University. I earned my International Baccalaureate from W.A.C.A. (West African College of the Atlantic) ENKO Education. While earning my Bachelor’s in Global Affairs, I also developed a working relationship with the University Admins, where I worked for over 10 years while benefiting from multiple development and skill training. I am passionate about building bridges between our communities; music and multimedia were my way. I have been into music production since the age of 16 years old and was able to explore that passion fully thanks to George Mason University Resources and faculty. I could leverage the technical skills acquired in my academic and professional development to my advantage to structure my passion and hobbies as a creative project and business, allowing me in 2014 to lay down the foundation of my business and brand today known as DIINA Productions and julesxsow. As I explored different cities in the USA, I developed a network and brand, assisting in developing businesses and brands in audio engineering, content creation, and marketing.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t call it a smooth road. I was lucky amongst my African peers to have had the exposure and opportunity to evolve and develop in the USA; the road since has been full of great memories and challenging lessons that I am still learning and building from. The switch of culture and country was a huge shock at first. Adapting to the ways and finding self in a new language and environment was initially challenging. I can’t say I was blessed with the best guidance coming as an international student and sinking into college life while also working and developing as a professional. It took a lot of research and purposeful networking to smoothen the road for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Creative Entrepreneur and Artist. Artist at heart as I have been into beat production and audio engineering since I was 16. In college, I refined my skills and gained additional experience as an audio and recording engineer for my artist college peers. After developing a decent music catalog and no platform at the time or way of exposure or publishing, I started learning the music business thanks to George Mason University resources and much research. My marketing and business background allowed me to quickly make sense of it and organize the business behind the music I was creating while designing and organizing campaigns for each project to be released. I sharpened my skills in creative beat after beat, and I slowly grew from a Bedroom Producer to a content creator/creative entrepreneur. I went from just making beats, mixing, and mastering to photography, graphic design, video editing, and video director to the online marketer and event promoter, host, and DJ in most of the things I do; the fact that I am multilingual and multicultural has been my biggest asset. I was able to reach people and relate to more people from different walks of life while keeping an open mind and heart. I, therefore, pride myself in my “international” identity. And event aspires to use and explore sounds and techniques from different cultures and parts of the world in my craft.
Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
There has always been a little place for luck in my life. Most of the things that happened were either the result of hard work, dedication, and focus or just the opposite; the lack thereof.
