Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Schmidt.
Hi Joy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, it all started back when I was a little girl and I used to play with Barbie’s hair instead of actually play with them. My mother used to get so mad at me because I used to cut their hair off. Once I turned 15 I had an opportunity to go to cosmetology school through a high school program so I went half a day to beauty school and half day to high school my junior and senior year I actually graduated beauty school before high school. That was back in 1995 worked at several salons and then in 2010 I became a licensed cosmetology instructor did that for many years. Had a ton of passion behind It absolutely loved it but truly missed doing hair. I was so thankful when my oldest daughter decided she wanted to go to beauty school and then my middle daughter decided she wanted to be an esthetician and my youngest daughter decided she wanted to be a hairstylist. So I came home one day looked at my husband and I said I think it’s time for us to open a salon and here. We are going strong for two years with my husband by my side and my three daughters working right alongside me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d like to say my 31 year career in the cosmetology industry has been pretty smooth. I think it has a lot to do with I’m so passionate about it and I absolutely love what I do however, I do want to sing the song by Rolling Stones a lot you can’t always get what you want to several people, but that would probably be frowned upon lol
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I’m a hairstylist which being a hairstylist we are super creative. I’d like to label us as artist. I specialize in cutting. I love anything from a nice classic bob to a crazy shag to a modern day mullet. Something that I most proud of is seeing my daughters love this industry as much as I do and also seeing my staff take pride in their work and show up for work every day and be on point for their clients. I feel that one thing that sets us apart from others is we’re not a competitive salon. We all get along with one another we help one another out, we bounce ideas off one another and honestly I just don’t really tolerate drama so keeping the good vibes going is so important because people feel that when they walk through your front door in a business. I’m gonna throw what I’m thankful for in there too my husband of 27 years supporting me every step of the way to make this dream of mine happen. Also sorry for the run-on sentences. I’m doing talk to text.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
One thing that I absolutely love about the Jacksonville and Yulee area is the arts. There’s so many great artists Amelia Island and Jacksonville that I think it’s amazing so many creative people. Nassau County has been so welcoming to us, our clients that we have coming through the door are so sweet and we love that they tell their friends and family about us cause that’s what keeps us going.
