Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Meyer.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My husband Jason and myself moved here from Bergen County, New Jersey in October of 2019. And I think Jason always had something like Three Dogs Woodworks in the back of his mind, because a big enough garage was a prerequisite while we were house hunting. While I opened an Etsy shop in 2021 making wood signs and other small items, Three Dogs Woodworks wasn’t born until late 2022 when Jason left his career as a project manager for a glass company based in Wilmington. Jason had been creating furniture pieces for friends and family as a side hobby, until we realized he really had a knack for woodworking. Three Dogs Woodworks officially went into business in November of 2022. We started out with simple exotic wood cutting boards mostly. But in 2024, something shifted and this business became more than we ever could have hoped and prayed for. We quickly adapted to what the market was asking us for, and started focusing on custom cabinetry and carpentry!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road for us has been anything but! Every day, we learn and grow. We work out of a relatively small space compared to the items we build, so space has been and still is a challenge for us. We do everything in-house. Jason will usually only be the only person to ever lay his hands on a project, save for the small tasks we need to outsource. And while this is something we pride ourselves on, figuring out the best way to dedicate our space based on customers needs at the time is difficult. We are also a two-man show, with Jason doing all of the hands on labor, estimating, material sourcing, etc. So being a very small operation has it’s perks, but also comes with challenges along the way.
