Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather L. Pastor.
Hi Heather, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I had the freedom to choose a new path that I returned to my true passion – art. When the Paint and Sip concept was introduced to the marketplace, I had just gotten laid off from a middle-level management position in corporate America. I decided to take part in the severance package money to start my mobile art instruction business. I began teaching at various art organizations, restaurants, and private residences in New Smyrna Beach. This led to opportunities all over Volusia County. After teaching art to people of all ages for the last decade, I decided to rent a commercial space on Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach last summer. I have been a freelance art instructor with a mobile business since 2012. But I finally have my own space, a place to invite people in to learn!
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is not a smooth road for the most part, but the transition from a mobile business to a brick & mortar location has gone well. It has been a challenge to decide what hours of operation to keep since our market is a tricky mix of locals and tourists of all ages. Finding a good work/life balance has also been challenging as I’m the sole owner/artist who still needs the budget to hire assistance.
We’ve been impressed with One by One Design Studio, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
I teach acrylic painting (on various surfaces – canvas, wood, glass), drawing, and more. In a nutshell, I offer art classes, parties, and lessons to people of all ages. I’ve started specializing in customized art parties for all occasions and now have Drop In & Design (open studio) time for those who can’t attend a scheduled class. It’s a fun alternative for those visiting the area for a limited time or who want to create independently. In addition, I’ve added a few events to the schedule that are more “crafty,” like floral design and jewelry making, taught by local entrepreneurs.
What sets me apart is the fun, supportive environment I provide to those who desire to learn but have been too busy or anxious about experimenting creatively. In most classes, all the supplies you need are provided. So, you can spend a little to learn a lot and not have to invest a ton in supplies to try out your skills with a specific medium.
The best marketing is still word of mouth. I have been “networking” in my classes and the community for years. If people come to one class, they’re hooked. They usually attend more than one course with me.
