Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwendolyn Height.
Hi Gwendolyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Six years ago, I wanted to learn more about the tax industry. I took classes with H &R Block, continued education online, and completed internship with a few seasoned tax professionals that I met on social media. I also have an Aunt Sadie that has been doing taxes over 50 yrs. She is a great resource for me and others. I was a tax filer who no longer had dependents. I thought it was not fair for myself or single filers to have to pay in or receive a low refund. After all, we are hardworking citizens who pay taxes as well. This was my drive to support taxpayers with the same problem as myself. Throughout the year, I send updates and emails about ways to save and prepare for the upcoming tax year. I believe that people need reminders. updates, incentives, and year-round customer support. One incentive, I love to give is the all-inclusive free cruise to Bahamas. My clients just simply pay the port fees and pack. In addition, I love helping to fix problems. Initially, my earlier clients would have all types of issues with identity, marketplace insurance, tax debt, and so much more. I learned how to fix their problems if I could or refer them to others who could assist. This has been my reason why and it still is.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a fruitful return but a hard position at times. Many taxpayers do not realize that once the IRS has the tax information that is filed, tax preparers no longer have any control over what’s next. I have been treated indifferently but I have a standard that I live by. It’s ” just because another person is disrespectful, it doesn’t mean that I become unprofessional”. I am going to show respect and courtesy because that’s who I am. Also, getting people to understand why we need copies of medical records or school records can be challenging to comply with due diligence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an entrepreneur with a 9-5. I work in hospice during the day as a nurse. I operate my business around my hospice hours. I specialize in small business returns, helping clients get their credits and deductibles, and maximizing the refund. I am known to many for having good communication skills, explaining the tax process, and how to have a better refund in the upcoming year. I am proud every time I help a business owner receive a refund and not having to pay in. It brings me joy every time. I believe I am different in preparing taxes, but I am approachable, have people skills, and I’m very creative with finding solutions.
What matters most to you?
I care about retention and my clients leaving with their expectations exceeded. I use to sell cars for Tenneson Nissan. I remember being told that all new car dealerships have great cars. What makes you different is how you treat and care of people. This has been a business principal that I live by.
