Today we’d like to introduce you to Git Tran
Hi Git, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey there, I’m Git. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and I’m a first-generation Vietnamese American. My journey into entrepreneurship started pretty early. I began with club promotions, which was really fun and taught me a lot about connecting with people and creating awesome experiences.
After that, I saw a hot opportunity in the vape industry and opened a vape shop. Running the shop was an amazing experience – it gave me hands-on lessons in retail management, customer service, and staying on top of market trends.
However I wanted to expand my horizons, so I took a leap into the corporate world and landed a leadership role in marketing at Safetouch Security. Working there for three years was a big shift from my previous gigs, but it was a fantastic learning experience. I developed strategic thinking and leadership skills while running successful marketing campaigns.
Even though I was doing well in the corporate sector, my entrepreneurial spirit was still too strong. I wanted a challenge and fresh start so I moved to Atlanta and started my own marketing agency, WeekThink. Building a business from scratch in a new city was both challenging and exciting. Over six years, I scaled the agency and team. WeekThink helped me learn so much about the marketing industry and the importance of effective branding.
Recently, I moved to Asia for 7 months to start a venture in the marijuana industry. Thailand had just legalized it in May 2022, and we were boots on the ground in August. After that mission, Jacksonville called me back home. I returned with a new perspective I’d gained with my partners and a new vision in mind. That’s how The Colab Cafe in Riverside was born. Colab Cafe isn’t just a place to grab photos; it’s a hub for collaboration, creativity, and community. It’s a space where ideas are exchanged, and connections are made.
My journey has been all about learning and evolving, driven by a passion for innovation and making a positive impact. From club promotions to corporate marketing, and now with Colab Cafe, each step has been an adventure in perseverance and vision.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any entrepreneurial journey, mine has had its fair share of bumps and challenges. Here are some of the struggles I’ve faced along the way:
1. Starting Out in Club Promotions: When I first started in club promotions, it was tough to break into the scene. Building a network and gaining trust in an industry where everyone is vying for attention was challenging. I had to prove myself, often working long hours and dealing with setbacks like low-turnout events.
2. Opening the Vape Shop: The vape industry was booming, but it was also highly competitive. There were numerous regulations to navigate, and keeping up with the changing legal landscape was a constant challenge. Additionally, managing the operational aspects of the shop, from inventory to customer relations, required a steep learning curve.
3. Corporate Marketing at Safetouch Security: Transitioning from small business ventures to a corporate environment at Safetouch Security was a significant adjustment. The corporate world has its own set of challenges, including navigating office politics and aligning my creative marketing strategies with the company’s established protocols. Balancing innovation with corporate expectations was tricky at times.
4. Starting a Marketing Agency in Atlanta: Moving to a new city and starting a business from scratch was incredibly challenging. I had to build a client base from the ground up and establish my reputation in a competitive market. There were moments of self-doubt and financial stress, especially in the early days when cash flow was tight.
5. Launching Colab Cafe: Returning to Jacksonville and starting Colab Cafe was both exciting and daunting. The biggest challenge was creating a unique concept that stood out in a saturated market. I wanted Colab Cafe to be more than just another coffee shop, so building a community-centric space required a lot of effort in terms of marketing, customer engagement, and event planning.
Through all these challenges, the key has been persistence and a willingness to learn and adapt. Every setback taught me something valuable, and every struggle was an opportunity to grow. It’s been a wild ride, but each obstacle has made the journey all the more rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
