Today we’d like to introduce you to Gira Patel.
Hi Gira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Board Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and the founder of First Coast Ayurveda in Jacksonville, Florida. My work brings together the depth of traditional Ayurvedic medicine and the clarity of modern science, offering a grounded, integrative approach to holistic health.
My connection to Ayurveda began long before I ever studied it formally. I grew up in a home where natural medicine was simply part of daily life — herbs simmering on the stove, remedies passed down through generations, and a deep trust in the body’s innate intelligence. At the time, I didn’t realize how much of that wisdom I was absorbing. Only later did I understand how profoundly it shaped me.
My academic path initially led me into the sciences. I earned a master’s degree in Biological Sciences, then moved to Jacksonville in 2007 to study Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of North Florida. I was fascinated by how nutrients, metabolism, and physiology influence health. Even then, a quiet part of me felt drawn to the ancient principles I grew up with — not to replace science, but to bridge it.
That bridge became essential during one of the most defining moments of my life. During pregnancy, despite following every medical recommendation, I developed HELLP syndrome and delivered my baby prematurely. The months that followed were filled with respiratory challenges and repeated infections for my newborn. In that vulnerable and frightening time, I found myself reaching back toward the Ayurvedic principles I had once taken for granted.
These events led me to explore Ayurveda.
As I began integrating Ayurvedic practices into our daily lives, I witnessed profound shifts — steadier health for my baby, renewed strength for myself, and a deep sense of alignment. What had once been familiar became transformative. Ayurveda was no longer just part of my upbringing. It became my purpose.
Determined to study this science at its roots, I earned a master’s degree in Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine from Maharishi International University and became Board Certified by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA). Today, I blend my scientific training with classical Ayurvedic knowledge to offer personalized care rooted in both tradition and research.
Through First Coast Ayurveda, I provide nutrition guidance, lifestyle coaching, herbal support, and individualized wellness plans that help clients restore balance and reconnect with their body’s innate intelligence. My goal is to make Ayurveda accessible, practical, and relevant for modern life.
Beyond my clinical work, I formulate my own herbal oils and remedies using recipes from classical Ayurvedic texts and ingredients grown in my home garden. I am passionate about educating communities on the power of natural healing and the importance of aligning with the rhythms of nature.
What sets me apart is my vision. I don’t see Ayurveda as a relic of the past — I see it as a living science. I’m always exploring ways to integrate ancient principles with contemporary discoveries so I can offer my clients tools that feel both timeless and relevant.
Through my work, I remind people that healing is not a quick fix. It is a journey — one that begins with understanding ourselves, honoring our roots, and choosing balance and vitality every single day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the greatest challenges I face as an Ayurvedic practitioner is the widespread misconception that Ayurveda is simply a spa experience rather than a structured system of lifestyle medicine. Because many people first encounter Ayurveda through yoga studios or wellness spas, they often miss the depth of assessment, training, and clinical reasoning that guide my work. Ayurveda is not misunderstood because it is unclear; it is misunderstood because people have only seen one tiny slice of it. And because Ayurveda originated in India, some assume it is tied to religion or spirituality, not realizing it is a codified medical science with diagnostics, pathology, and preventive frameworks. This limited exposure often leads clients to undervalue the expertise behind personalized recommendations and expect quick, relaxation based results instead of the long term, behavior focused transformation Ayurveda is designed to support.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about First Coast Ayurveda?
I offer a holistic range of Ayurvedic services that begin with a detailed constitution assessment to understand each client’s unique mind–body makeup and current imbalances. From there, I create personalized diet and lifestyle plans to help restore balance, along with Ayurvedic cooking guidance and meal planning support to make nourishing, balancing meals easy to integrate into daily life. I also guide clients through stress reduction and sleep support practices, offer digestive and metabolic support, and specialize in women’s health across all life stages. Throughout the year, I lead gentle seasonal cleanses, and where permitted, I incorporate traditional therapies such as Shirodhara and warm oil treatments to support deep relaxation and grounding.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’m deeply grateful for the people who carried me through this journey. My sister’s constant encouragement kept me grounded, my spouse’s steady support made it possible for me to pursue my education wholeheartedly, and my children’s patience and understanding gave me the strength to keep going. Their belief in me has been one of my greatest motivators.
