Today we’d like to introduce you to dom sankofa.
Hi dom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started in elementary school. While others excelled in gym enrichment, I excelled in Art. From the age of five, I’ve been making art that represents me as a person as well as the giants that I come from. My mom would bring home boxes of copy paper for me to draw on, and I would litter the house with sketches filled with my imagination. I eventually got my first sketchbook from my aunt Kathy and began to understand the importance of art and what it means to not only people, but society as well.
As I’ve gotten older and become more in tune with my cultural roots, my art has taken on that cultural appreciation. I specialize in African diasporic-centered art. nostalgia90seven (my brand) focuses on “paying homage to African diasporic culture through artistic expression” while also tying it back to beauty of nostalgia. My art is an ode to the beautiful diasporic imagery I’ve been raised in, so I enjoy being able to create things that bring a sense of belonging/family to my people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In certain moments in my career, it’s been rocky. Art/ist block has been my biggest enemy alongside my own self doubt. At times, I feel that my art is great. Sometimes I feel like I’m not doing enough, so it can be frustrating to my growth. I’d say comparison is the biggest thief of joy as mental trip-ups for a lot of artists. I have to always remember that my art is mine alone, my story is unique, and my style comes from my own power.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My primary focuses are traditional and digital paintings as well as rug tufting. My specialty is definitely rug tufting because it’s been the most consistent practice I’ve done in the past three years. Plus I believe it’s a more intimate craft; you understand the value of yarn and how it can translate into something recognizable.
What sets me apart is that I am a Sociologist. My art focuses on the sociological aspect of expression, and how identities intersect. Without this extra layer of awareness, my art wouldn’t have much meaning.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A surprising thing that most people might not know about me as the artist is that despite how vibrant and extroverted my art is, I’m an ambivert. I can be both introverted and extroverted at times. As much as I would love for everyone to consume my art, I’m not big on promoting myself (which doesn’t help much). I would consider myself to be humble because I want my art to speak for itself.
