Today we’d like to introduce you to Atavia Brown.
Hi Atavia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a young girl, I was surrounded by braiders almost all my life. My dad’s ex-wife was a hairstylist and my mom did hair as well. As my mom did my hair I use to practice braiding on my Barbie and Bratz dolls. And when I say practice I literally cut, braided and even added weave to their hair. I started becoming an actual braider around the age of 10 going into middle school. I started practicing on my own hair then my older cousins and aunts would ask me to do theirs. As time went by, I started to get more and more family members that turned into clients. I later gave up that passion for doing hair around high school and college because I was more focused on just living life. Well little did I know that being a braider was a part of that life until recently. I did hair every now and then but I didn’t take it seriously until June 2021. I felt like maybe this was actually my calling and this was my time. I was nervous and doubted myself but with the support of my children(s) father and my family and friends, I gained that confidence to try to expand myself and become a Travel Braider. Now I know I’m not the first to come up with this and won’t be the last but it’s hard to find a braider nowadays who keeps their word and you get serviced. It’s too many scammers out there but with my services not only do I offer the full experience but you have an option of me coming to you as well. Not too many people have time to go get their hair done and I understand that being a single mom with 2 kids. My goal here is to not only just bring excellent services to you but also take care of your hair as well. My mom use to tell me all the time not too many people can grow hair but my hands have proven to show that not only are they talented but they are gifted as well. I look forward to TayB brand expanding worldwide, servicing young and old. One day I’ll get to do one of my favorite celebrities and their daughter’s hair one day!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, nothing is really easy. And I’m ok say with that. My struggles would be in promoting myself. If you’re not promoting yourself, how would others know to take you seriously! I’m my biggest supporter right now and trying to get a clientele can be hard but I have my faith.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a braider! Freestyle braids, knotless plaits, honestly anything you challenged me to do I CAN DO IT! I’m proud of me pushing myself because I like a challenge! I won’t say no to any style that my friends throw at me! What sets me apart from others is I’m unique in every kind of way! I’m an artist when it comes to braiding game! Challenge me to anything and I promise you I can ace it!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I learned is not everyone is meant for you meaning, not everyone will be my client. I have had some people scheduled and canceled or not show up. Also, I have reached out and done people’s hair for free and not said anything but I learned that I have I speak more and take myself more seriously. If I don’t then who will?
