Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Trendler
Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was a sommelier in New York City before I was invited to write and perform my first séance on stage in Los Angeles. I was flown out, performed a sold out show and was invited by a local writer to be his guest at The Magic Castle in Hollywood.
When I came back to New York I could no longer focus on work. I was doing small, back-room séance and hypnosis shows and taking tarot clients on Zoom.
In 2019 I left New York and moved to Jacksonville Beach. Some of my work was featured on television in 2022 and I continued to take new tarot and palmistry clients in private while tending bar at the beach.
Coming to Florida allowed me to clear my mind and reassess my aesthetics in a way that wasn’t available to me in New York.
I’ve done a handful of shows in town and I’m excited to be doing more.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve often struggled to define exactly what I do or to put a label on things. A psychoanalyst at Berkeley described my work as “ontological” and existing in the space where we no longer care what is real and what is not.
My show combines hypnosis and the with the tricks and theatrics of Victorian spirit theatre. All made modern and fun, of course.
In private, I have helped close to 200 clients realize their goals and unburden themselves through tarot and palmistry.
There are skeptics. And I invite skepticism. I never ask anyone to value faith over pragmatism.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have performed dozens of stage shows where I combine the methods and mechanics of old school spirit theatre with modern metaphysics and humor.
I have also consulted and written material for many professional magicians, including writing the script and handling of a piece featured on season 9 of The CW’s “Penn & Teller: FOOL US” for magician Andy Gershenzon.
Recently I have focused on developing my tarot and palmistry practice where I meet with clients privately to address their goals, fears and futures. This uses a combination of traditional occult praxis with modern psychology and intuition. There are few if any tarot readers who are able to read this way, and anyone I’ve sat with would be happy to tell you that the results are far from the trivial cold readings you get from the neon-sign psychics along the highway.
I am very excited to be performing at Bluejay Listening Room in South Jax Beach. It has been one of my favorite venues since I moved here.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love how small the beaches community is. Only being here a few years, I feel settled into a home. I know all my neighbors. I have trust and comfort here in a way that isn’t possible in larger cities.
The beaches are beautiful and even on the worst days of cold weather and rain, it’s orders of magnitude better than anywhere up north.
