Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Bunion, Jr.
Hi Tony, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Havana, Florida, a small town just outside of Tallahassee. Growing up, I faced many challenges and obstacles that could have easily determined the course of my life. Like many others, I experienced difficult circumstances, financial struggles, and situations that often become generational cycles within families and communities.
However, by the grace of God, I refused to allow my circumstances to define my future. Through faith, perseverance, education, mentorship, and a strong support system, I was able to overcome many of the barriers placed before me. I earned my degree from Florida A&M University and dedicated my life to serving others through education, coaching, mentoring, and community outreach.
My journey inspired me to write Breakin Cycles: The Power of My Testimony, a book that shares my personal story of overcoming adversity and demonstrates how faith in God can transform lives. What began as a testimony became a mission to encourage others who may feel trapped by their past, their environment, or their circumstances. Since its publication, the book has reached readers across the country, sold more than 1,000 copies, been incorporated into youth development programs, and received recognition through multiple literary awards.
Today, I am a husband, father, educator, coach, speaker, and author. I continue to use my testimony as a platform to inspire young people and adults alike to believe that their current situation does not have to dictate their future. My passion is helping others realize that cycles can be broken, purpose can be discovered, and lives can be transformed.
Most importantly, I give all glory to God. Every opportunity, every accomplishment, and every life impacted through my story is a testament to His grace, favor, and faithfulness. My journey is proof that with God, what may seem impossible is possible, and that our setbacks can become setups for something greater than we ever imagined.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road at all. In fact, my journey has been filled with challenges, setbacks, losses, and obstacles that could have easily derailed my future.
One of the earliest and most significant struggles came while I was still in high school. As a teenager, I found myself in trouble with the law and went to jail for the first time. I ultimately accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 18 months of probation. That experience forced me to take a hard look at the direction my life was heading. While many people may have counted me out at that point, I made a decision that my mistakes would not define my future. I graduated from high school while still on probation, determined to change the trajectory of my life.
The challenges did not stop there. Coming from humble beginnings, I faced financial hardships, negative influences, and the pressures that often accompany growing up in an environment where generational cycles can seem impossible to break. There were many moments when the odds appeared stacked against me, but I remained committed to education, personal growth, and my faith in God.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is becoming the first male in my family to graduate from college. Earning my degree from Florida A&M University was more than a personal achievement; it was a breakthrough for my family and proof that cycles can be broken.
Perhaps the greatest heartbreak of my life came in 2019 when my daughter, Malia Dionne Bunion, passed away at just six months old. Losing a child is a pain that words cannot fully describe. There were moments of grief, confusion, and deep sorrow that tested my faith and strength in ways I had never experienced before. Yet even through that tragedy, God continued to carry my family and me through the healing process.
Along the way, there have been countless other struggles, disappointments, failures, and moments of uncertainty. However, each challenge taught me valuable lessons about resilience, perseverance, faith, and purpose. Those experiences ultimately became the foundation for my book, Breakin Cycles: The Power of My Testimony.
Looking back, I realize that every obstacle helped shape the man I am today; a husband, father, educator, coach, mentor, speaker, and author. My story is not one of a smooth road but of God’s grace sustaining me through difficult seasons. It is a testimony that your past does not have to determine your future, your setbacks do not have to become your identity, and with faith, determination, and God’s guidance, it is possible to overcome even the toughest circumstances.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
For the past 14 years, I have dedicated my life to education, mentorship, and helping young people reach their full potential. I currently serve as a high school Algebra I teacher, and I also coach high school football and track and field. While I enjoy teaching mathematics and coaching athletics, my true passion is building meaningful relationships with students and helping them believe in themselves, often speaking life, encouragement, and purpose into them during some of the most important years of their lives.
My educational journey began at Wayman Academy of the Arts on the west side of Jacksonville, Florida. I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Wayman Academy for giving me my first opportunity as a Health and Physical Education teacher. That experience helped shape me into the educator and mentor I am today and reinforced my belief that education is about much more than academics; it’s about impacting lives.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving students in a variety of roles, including teacher, coach, mentor, speaker, and youth advocate. Whether I’m in the classroom, on the football field, at a track meet, or speaking to a group of young people, my goal is always the same: to help others recognize their value, overcome obstacles, and realize that their circumstances do not have to determine their future.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is authoring Breakin Cycles: The Power of My Testimony. Through my book and speaking engagements, I have been able to reach individuals far beyond the classroom and share a message of faith, resilience, and hope. Seeing students, families, and readers inspired to pursue a better future because of my story has been incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with people through authenticity. I don’t just teach lessons from a textbook; I teach from experience. I’ve overcome personal struggles, setbacks, and loss, and I use those experiences to encourage others who may be facing challenges of their own. Students know that I genuinely care about them, not only as learners but as individuals. I believe relationships come before results, and when people know you care, they become more willing to believe in themselves.
At the end of the day, I am most proud of the lives I have impacted. Awards, titles, and accomplishments are meaningful, but knowing that I have helped a young person stay on the right path, graduate, pursue higher education, or simply believe they can overcome adversity is what brings me the greatest sense of fulfillment. My mission has always been to break cycles, build bridges, and leave every person I encounter better than I found them.
How do you think about luck?
To be honest, I don’t call it luck; I call it God’s grace and mercy.
Throughout my life, there have been many situations where people may look at the outcome and say I was lucky, but I recognize that it was God opening doors, providing favor, and carrying me through circumstances that could have easily turned out differently. From overcoming personal challenges as a young man, to becoming the first male in my family to graduate from college, to becoming an educator, coach, author, and speaker, I believe God’s hand has been present every step of the way.
At the same time, I firmly believe that faith without works is dead. While I trust God completely, I also understand that we have a responsibility to do our part. I have never been afraid of hard work. Whether it was in the classroom, on the athletic field, writing my book, pursuing higher education, or serving my community, I have always been willing to put in the time, effort, and sacrifice required to achieve my goals.
When opportunities present themselves, I do my best to take advantage of them. I believe preparation and hard work position us to receive the blessings and opportunities that God places before us. Many people see the success, but they don’t always see the years of work, perseverance, setbacks, disappointments, and sacrifices that came before it.
If there has been any “good luck” in my life, I would describe it as God’s grace meeting my willingness to work. And if there has been any “bad luck,” it has often become a lesson, a source of growth, or a testimony that ultimately strengthened my faith and character.
My journey has taught me that success is not about luck. It is about faith, hard work, perseverance, preparation, and trusting God through every season. I am grateful for every opportunity I’ve been given, but I never take them for granted because I know they are the result of both God’s favor and a commitment to making the most of every opportunity placed before me.
