Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Buresh.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve long had an infatuation with the weather while growing up in Iowa. My first t.v. meteorologist job out of college (Iowa State University) was in Des Moines, Iowa for a few years then 11 years in Cincinnati, Ohio & the last 24 years in Jacksonville.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t call it necessarily a smooth road – there were twists and turns. But no regrets. The hours have been arduous, & I worked many different shifts in Des Moines and Cincinnati before landing the head (“chief”) job in Jacksonville. The greatest struggle is probably balancing work and family. Because of the hurricane season in particular, I’ve been called back to work from multiple family vacations. But in the end, I would say it’s payed off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I forecast the weather for Jacksonville, NE Florida and SE Georgia on a daily basis. That includes t.v., radio, web & social media. I’ve forecasted – & reported on – many local & national weather disasters. And I make numerous public appearances talking “All the Weather, All the Time”. I write a weekly blog “Buresh Blog” & daily “Talking the Tropics With Mike” during the hurricane season. I’m probably most proud of my efforts to help raise money for – & awareness about – a myriad of local nonprofits. I’m also proud of my pragmatic approach to forecasting about and reporting on the weather.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I eat chocolate every day.
