Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Norris.
Hi Marie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My journey commenced when my Godmother, Josephine, passed away from cancer. After her demise, she bequeathed all of her specialty jewelry items to me. In honor of her name, I created a jewelry business titled Josephine’s Haute Couture Jewelry. During this time, I also started developing Wine and Cheese Affair women empowerment events that became a hit in Tampa and Clearwater, FL but my efforts ceased once I became diagnosed with stage 3 Cancer.
After my battle and surviving the test of time, I decided to get back into the jewelry game through vending at various events. My business was more than an idea or a way to make money. It was my purpose to touch the lives of women and pour into their hearts love and self-confidence. Later on, I relocated back to my hometown of Jacksonville, FL where I decided to expand my line of products to include clothing, hats, and other women’s accessories. My customer base increased which led to me opening up a location at 4108 Blanding Blvd. in 2018.
The following year, I was nominated for Best Boutique in Jacksonville, FL, and placed. Doors started opening in which my boutique was featured in IHeart Radio Fashion show, News4Jax Fashion Forward, Arlenes Gowns Cancer Survivor Fashion Show, and Detroit, MI Total Entertainment Radio.
I have shipped all over the US from Corona, California, to Houston, Texas, to Maryland and of course all within Jacksonville, FL where I provide local delivery, curbside pickups, and two more additional pickup locations on the Southside and Northside. I am looking forward to my future success as I continue to expand with J. Haute Couture Boutique.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not. For any business, you create there will always be obstacles. My trials and tribulations consisted of health issues, my father passing away and marketing once I relocated back to Jacksonville, as I shared in the last section, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer which caused my efforts to cease temporarily while I underwent chemotherapy.
Later on that year after I won the battle, then my Dad lost his fight to Leukemia all within the same year. 2013 was a very challenging year that I will never forget. After relocating back to Jacksonville, FL, I traveled a lot to network, joined groups, and executed vending opportunities to facilitate in the expansion of my brand. Vending is NO JOKE but I did it because I got a chance to meet women like me interested in my product.
I inquired about local fashion shows and offered my fashion line. In addition, I would offer an item as a raffle for an event to help create some type of buzz about my boutique. I worked extremely hard during the initial phase after the transition from a jewelry business to a boutique.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am very personable. I love for my customers to feel special and important. My slogan is “Purchase yourself a beautiful gift today.”
I want my ladies to take the time out to focus on making themselves feel good and using some of their hard-earned money towards an item that makes them feel beautiful.
I love to wrap every single purchase as a gift with a bow. I have been doing this since the inception of my business and will continue.
