Life & Work with Laia Okolie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laia Okolie.

Laia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I initially got into the esthetics field for makeup. I was self-conscious about my skin at a young age so in 9th grade I started wearing makeup to cover up my insecurities. It grew into a passion for collecting and creating makeup looks.

Finally, in 2020, I pursued my passion seriously and decided to become licensed. I didn’t initially think skincare would be important or something I would be interested in. I had tunnel vision for the makeup portion only.

But once I went to school – I developed a love for skincare and waxing. I still wear makeup and love it but learning about skin – especially the skin of color – has helped my self-confidence tremendously.

My passions are now to help women and men feel beautiful with the power of skincare, hair removal, and makeup.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been easy.

Initially when I started taking makeup clients in 2018/2019 – consistency was my biggest issue. I would give up and start back again – I would compare my work to other people and felt like I wasn’t good enough. Thankfully, my family and friends continued to push me to use the gifts that God gave me.

Finally, I stopped making excuses and pursued my license. I left school with two more passions and brand new confidence to correct my own skin and also others’.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed esthetician. I offer skin care, hair removal, and makeup services. I specialize in skin care treatments. I would have to say I am most proud of staying consistent with my esthetician career for over a year. I didn’t let fear, depression, or anxiety stop me from achieving success with my business.

What sets me apart from others is that I understand and sympathize with each of my clients. I know that health issues such as PCOS or mental health can affect how your skin is or how you view your skin. I offer treatments to correct any skin concerns, apply makeup to showcase the natural beauty that is already existing, and offer waxing services for both men and women.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am always reading skincare magazines to educate myself on new trends and also I utilize YouTube to see how other estheticians are operating in their treatment rooms.
