Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerra Shanice.
Hi Kerra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved hair, which I have taken pride in regarding my appearance since I was a little girl. Shortly after high school, I discovered sew-ins and virgin hair bundles. I regularly kept my hair in sew-ins and eventually transitioned from relaxed to natural hair. Once my natural hair leave-out maintenance became too much with my sew-ins due to my workout regimen, I experimented with closure wigs. After I learned to wear them correctly, I later self-taught myself how to construct my wig. After making my own, I made a few for others and received many compliments. I continued perfecting my craft of not only constructing the units but customizing them properly, so they looked as natural as the sew-ins I used to love. I slowly gained more clients, and in 2020 I turned my side hustle into an LLC specializing in selling virgin hair bundles and ready-to-wear wigs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey was not and is not always pleasant, as I’m sure many entrepreneurs can speak to. There’s always more to learn, failed attempts, negative energy, setbacks, delays, work life for those who still work 9-5 as I do, and sometimes just your personal life that can pull your focus away from your business or make it hard to stay motivated. Regardless, it’s important to stay consistent and trust the process.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
To sum it all up, I don’t consider myself a hairstylist technically, as that’s not my goal, but I design wigs, and I’m very knowledgeable about both wigs and hair bundles. I specialize in wig services, making wigs, styling wigs, fixing wigs, transforming wigs, etc. I would have to say that I’m most proud of my growth. As I continue to do this, I get better, and I will keep improving. I believe my spin on how I present my products sets me apart from others. I don’t always have the client chair videos or the post-install photos to show because I don’t offer installations as an official service. So I try to think of more creative ways to present my products and services. Also, customer service is huge to me, so I try to promote my “open door policy” to prospective and current customers.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always had my hair done nicely, so it was just a thing for me and stayed that way into adulthood. I didn’t grow up with any sisters; I was the only girl, so I wasn’t very prissy, lol, and I wasn’t necessarily fixated on doing hair, but it was always important to me. Personality-wise, I’ve always been a quick learner, likable, hard-working, and independent, so I think those attributes have helped me succeed.
