Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Priscilla Horton
Hi Dr. Priscilla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started making products because of my first love, oncology patients. I am a doctor of nursing and work for a well known cancer center here in Jacksonville. My family, like many has been touched by cancer. With this in mind I used integrative medicine components to help with everyday symptoms such as anxiety, head aches, nausea and pain.
Through the use of essential oils we are able to work with those who are undergoing treatment and anyone who wants to use natural methods to help combat everyday symptoms. We often use our products in our house for stuffy noses, and stress. I started out making our products as gifts during the holidays and celebrations i.e. birthdays, anniversaries etc. I was quickly asked by many to recreate their candle, or bath & body product after their first use! Those at the time would often encourage me to sell given their love for the handmade items. I think the appeal is knowing what is in the products and seeing how well they work, people wanted more.
This was about five years ago, and I didn’t open my shop until 2022 while seeking my doctorate. You would think I had enough to do at the time, and believe me, I did, however I found that through my research of implementing essential oils for our palliative medicine program, I was compelled to finally move forward. It was also fulfilling for me to feel like I was able to help those who wanted to feel good about the items they use in their homes, and in their personal care everyday,
Since then we have continued to add items based on requests such as dandruff shampoo and antiaging serums I am grateful I get to help people feel better inside and out of my current profession as a DNP each day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think it was a progression, or lead up to an overwhelming sign that kept flashing in front of me! It has had its hurdles and steep learning curves, but I have enjoyed the process as learning is something I enjoy doing. Our journey has been steady, with a few curve balls that were unexpected, but I hope with time and effort we are able to find the right path. With my background in science, and medicine, I am absolutely lacking in the marketing and sales area!
I am thankful I had some knowledge of business management since I pursued my MBA in 2017, however, it did not prepare for everything! I learned that being among those also learning how to build an online business is important. We learn so much from each other.
I know we are a young company, and it is my hope with time and guidance we will continue to be able to serve those who want organic products that fit their lifestyle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my role with a large cancer center I am the director of care coordination and support services. What does that mean? I get to wrap people in care as they start their journey after they have been diagnosed with cancer. These roles are so important to ensure we meet the needs of our patients, ensuring we consider all their needs. What roles do you ask? Nurse navigators, nutrition, social workers. genetic counselors, access navigators, chaplains, psychology, and lung cancer screening. We touch patients prior to their arrival and follow them throughout their journey all the way to survivorship and palliative care.
We are known for renowned clinical care incorporating a disease site approach with clinicians and support that curates customized care. I am exceptionally proud of the methods and models we use to walk beside each patient and ensure they have the best possible outcome possible.
We are known for innovative methods of comprehensive cancer care. It is a partnership between Baptist Health and MD Anderson Cancer Center, offering a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment, integrating advanced technologies and therapies. The center provides individualized treatment plans created by a team of specialists, including oncologists, surgeons, and radiation therapists, ensuring a holistic and coordinated care approach.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Giving people products that not only work great, but are good for you as well is what matters the most to me the most. Being transparent about what you make, how you make it, and the benefits of how that complements lives is so important to me.
Our footprint is also eco-friendly. As a nurse it is important that we create wellness for everyone, and that means our ecological footprint as well. Knowing we use natural ingredients that is recyclable and or biodegradable is just as important to us as the contents of the products themselves.
Knowing that a young Mom can use our room spray or moisturize their baby with our body butter understanding its not going to not only help, but most importantly not harm, is exactly one of the reasons I created PH design organics.
As an example our room sprays can be sprayed on any surface without toxic residue being left behind. Even if you accidentally get it on your skin, which we all know happens from time to time, we know it will not harm those using it. It also gives pet owners peace of mind knowing if their beloved pet or child were to touch the solution, it would not harm them.
