Life & Work with Brianna Macella (MACXLLA) of Jacksonville, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Macella (MACXLLA).

Hi Brianna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Jacksonville, Florida, and later moved to Orlando for college, where I began my journey in poetry. My passion for poetry eventually led me to the world of spoken word, which seamlessly transitioned into music. I started by rewriting my favorite songs and, over time, began crafting my own lyrics to instrumentals.
My music has allowed me to perform across various cities, including Jacksonville, Orlando, Tallahassee, and Atlanta. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a rap collective, as well as organize and host my own open mics and showcases.
After the birth of my child, I took a step back from music to focus on family, during which time I also rebranded my sound. I made a conscious decision to move away from explicit lyrics, seeking to rediscover the core reasons I began writing music in the first place. This shift was a journey of self-reflection, allowing me to confront my fears, heal emotional wounds, and express gratitude for the talents I’ve been blessed with.
My music is deeply personal, addressing themes of challenging relationships and mental health, while offering hope and encouragement to those who may be struggling. I aim to inspire others to persevere, keep chasing their dreams, and find strength through their own experiences.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I’ve dealt with fear, doubt, lost friendships and lost mentors. The hardest battle is the one I face in the mirror everyday. Trying to tell myself that I am capable, I am worthy, I was chosen to be here for this time and place. Imposter syndrome has been very real. The fight between feeling the need to live a “normal” life; when your entire soul wants to chase its dreams. My biggest challenge now is that I’m a mom while I will do everything in my power to provide for my child, I want my child to know that I fought hard from my dreams as well.. I want my accomplishments to let him know that anything in life is possible. He’s the reason why I go as hard as I do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize is rap, which stems from my passion in spoken word. I am know for my soulful lyrics and explorative cadence, playing with different flows as my words dance with the instrumental tracks I write to. Many people in my city remember me from hosting open mics
, showcases, and artist development workshops. Though I have stepped away from being an event curator, the grassroots that I established formed connections that still grow with me today. Even after completing starting over, changing my artist name and rebranding; I have people rooting for me and I am proud to say those people helped me with a local rap competition last month. What sets me apart is that I don’t give up.. my beliefs, push me far, and I truly feel like the gift that I meant to share will change the world

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next five years, I see me completely trusting my creativity to take flight and lead me to new places new opportunities in new rooms. I believe that my creativity and intelligence will allow me to not only create beautiful art but also discover other talented artists as well.. I celebrate the culture and I would love to explore my creativity in many forms such as Music acting and even creating events for entertainment.
