Life & Work with Antoinette Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Antoinette Brown.

Antoinette Brown

Hi Antoinette, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Ever since I was a kid, I loved anime and admired those who worked in the industry, whether it was voice acting, cosplaying, etc. When I saw these icons dress as their characters and bring them to life, I knew I also wanted to do that. When I went to my first anime convention, being around like-minded people who complimented me, I could talk about my favorite shows without worrying about being judged; it changed my world. In the black community, liking anime was seen as weird, but I instead embraced what I loved and ran with it; since then, I have been making content cosplaying, streaming, etc., to contribute to the community that made me feel welcome and enjoy the things I love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It took a lot of work figuring out where to start, what anime convention to go to, what character I should do, and how I would make a costume or videos with bad phone quality. I look back on it now when I had 100 followers on tiktok. I was making fundamental amateur videos until I did my first cosplay, Mel from the series Arcane, League of Legends, and that’s when people started to love my content and relate to what I was trying to promote; within a year, I’ve made my way to over 4,500 thousand followers, and it’s still growing.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in anime cosplay and online game streaming. This goes from making videos and skits on TikTok in various cosplays to streaming the games I play on Twitch. I’m very proud of my cosplays, and it sets me apart from the norm because when I’m in cosplay, I’m not me; I’m that character, and I embrace every moment.

What matters most to you?
What matters to me the most is having people who look like me and have similar interests, knowing that it’s okay to be who you are, and not worrying about what others say about you. You can have your interests and enjoy them however you want without worrying about the hate the world gives you.
