Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Kelley.
Hi Anna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a Master Cosmetologist about four years ago in South Georgia. At the time, I was in college during the pandemic, taking virtual classes and realizing I wasn’t sure about what career path I wanted to take. I knew I wanted a career where I could be creative, connect with people, and make a difference in their lives. I felt the cosmetology industry would be perfect.
While some people don’t view cosmetology as a professional or important career, it is. Every day, I have the opportunity to help women feel more confident, beautiful, and like the best version of themselves. It’s about so much more than just hair or makeup. It’s about creating a space where people feel seen and cared for and connected with.
In 2024, I started Hair by Anna Ivy and worked full time in South Georgia, specializing in blondes and vivid hair color. I built an amazing clientele and was incredibly grateful for the support I received in Georgia. As much as I loved being there, I knew I wanted to continue growing, and experience something bigger and better.
In January 2026, I moved to Jacksonville. I quickly realized that although I was excited I was also terrified. There were so many salons in Jacksonville but, I wasn’t just looking for a place to work, I was looking for a space where I could truly be myself, continue learning, and be surrounded by people who inspired me while also allowing me to contribute to them.
I’m so thankful I found Steele Hair Gallery and our owner, Amber Hope Carpenter. From the moment I met Amber, I knew I had found the right place. She encourages me to express my creativity, trusts me with the freedom to serve my clients, and continually mentors me with the knowledge she has from being in the cosmetology industry for more than 20 years.
I’ve only been building my clientele in Jacksonville for about six months, but the experience has already been so rewarding. I’ve stayed busy, learned so much, and grown both personally and professionally. I’m excited to continue building my career while helping every client who sits in my chair feel confident, beautiful, and empowered.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think people realize how challenging the beauty industry can be. The road to success is rarely smooth, and many people who graduate from cosmetology school don’t end up building a long-term career in the industry. It’s not because they don’t work hard but it’s because there’s so much more to this career than just doing hair.
If you choose to work for yourself or work for a salon, there are a lot of challenges. You have to think about finances, buying products, taxes, learning your product lines, building a clientele, continuing your education, and finding what makes you stand out. There are so many talented hairstylists, you have to offer something that keeps clients coming back and connecting with you.
I’ve had some amazing clients, and I’ve also had a lot of difficult experiences along the way. Unfortunately anytime you work with people you will have difference of opinions and sometimes the type of clients that will never be happy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in hair color, specifically blonding and vivid colors. I think a lot of people see the beauty industry as being superficial, but for me it’s always been about creativity and self expression. I love helping people achieve their dream hair, whether that’s platinum blonde, a bright pink, or a full rainbow of colors. If it makes you feel confident and happy, let’s do it!
One of my favorite types of clients to work with is alternative style. I’m a huge rock and alternative music fan, so I understand how important it can be to express yourself through your hair, fashion, and makeup.
I think one thing that sets me apart as a stylist is that I don’t limit myself to one aesthetic. I love creating, natural, lived-in blondes just as much as I love bold, colorful, alternative transformations. I don’t let my personal style or my brand determine who I work with or what I choose to post. My goal is simply to help every client feel confident and comfortable.
What are your plans for the future?
Steele hair gallery will be moving to a new, bigger and better location soon! I am so excited for this because I will be able to extend my hours at the salon to offer more availability and more services!
I am also currently getting certified in extensions and will be offering them very soon!
