Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jessi Ferguson of Downtown Jacksonville

Jessi Ferguson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Jessi, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day start with my pets, lol. The babies get taken care of first. Morning potty, feeding the inside dogs and cats and then the outdoor kitties. Then, I make myself breakfast. I always make sure I have plenty of time to eat a full breakfast and have a little time to myself before I get the day started. Some days I do yoga after breakfast or go for a walk. I think it’s so important to have a little me time before my day gets busy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Jessi Ferguson. I am the owner/lead designer of J.Lea Florals. J.Lea Florals is a wedding and event floral company I began in 2021. I mostly work on weddings but am always up for anything floral! While I celebrate all types of love, I am proud to be a part of the LGBTQ community and create a safe space for couples alike. I have experienced firsthand what it’s like getting married and working with vendors as a lesbian couple. My experience made it a mission for me to make sure any and every couple getting married has the best experience possible.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me most about work and how important your work ethic is. Growing up, I went to work with my dad a lot. At the time, he worked for a coffee company. I would go around with him doing inventory, filling orders, helping clean and count money. He taught me how to be efficient and the importance of doing your job right. I also watched how he interacted with all of his customers which is something I carry with me today.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Over this past year and a half I got very burnt out between my work and personal life. I had over booked myself with work and on top of that was trying work through personal stuff and started therapy. For most of my life I always held in my feelings always pretending to be okay. Which only made me overwhelmed. This past year going through therapy has taught me to open up about my feelings and how I was struggling. I learned how to take time for myself and truly focus on what I needed and how to run a successful business at the same time. Opening up about everything has become my power. Not only has it helped me, but it also has helped those close to me by opening up as well. There is power in being your true self and inspires others to do the same.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my lovely wife for her character. If anyone knows her, you know what a personality she is. She is strong willed, vocal in the best way possible and always honest. I admire her for these characteristics because no matter who you are you she is the same person. She is always there to stand up for those who need it and she will always cheer you on.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
Love, empathy and compassion. At my core, I always have the best interest for everyone. I always hope that everyone gets to love and feel loved. I think that is done by showing compassion for one another. I have a huge, empathetic heart and always hope it is felt with each person I meet.
